Just previewed that song... well, thirty seconds of it. It's amateurish, sounds rubbish. I'll take Backspacer over that crap. They should get back to the day job.
I don't think it's that bad at all.
I know my post sounds venemous but I just think it sounds bland. The mix is weird; the bass is stupidly loud and you can hardly hear the drums. The singer sounds average. It's kind of just meh, like your mates did a home recording.

Ament's by far the most prolific member of PJ. I enjoy his energy... whether he hits a homer or misses completely. At least he's putting it out there.
Agreed.

FUck you, B. This is about the demise of Pearl Jam. it's slowly happening right before our very eyes.
I'll move it back for now.
Did B really move this to Other Bands? lol

Let's see ...
Stone: 5 Brad albums and 1 solo album Jeff: 2 Three Fish albums, 2 solo albums, and 1 Tres Mts. album
Surely the key difference is that Jeff has managed to release THREE full-length LPs since Backspacer's release - Tres Mts, 'While My Heart Beats' and this. Stone isn't the prominent songwriting presence in Brad.
Anyway, this doesn't bother me. Jeff isn't going to sit around waiting for these guys to get their shit together and good on him. I'm sure Pearl Jam will cobble together some songs eventually, I think it's clear it's a (well paying) part-time gig for them now. I hope this and the Soundgarden record don't rob the next album of too many Jeff and Matt songs, they're the bands most reliably good songwriters.

That song isn't terrible.
Nowhere near as bad (or amateurish) as Harmless seems to think.
It's not setting my world on fire, but it's okay.
It's amateurish *because* it's 'just OK'. What's the point of taking a break from one of the best bands in the world, Pearl Jam, after 20+ years, to record something with some random musician friends which is 'just OK'? I think this is amateurish because it's no better than something any one of us could've recorded. Yes, it's relative; if one of us had recorded it, I'd have said it was pretty good. But someone with decades of musical experience? No way. It's bland and derative and no reason to take a break from Pearl Jam for, a massive waste of time. The best that could happen out of this is that these side projects inspire PJ to get back to what they're best at. I'm grateful for these side projects because they remind me that I do actually still like Pearl Jam.

Sure, it's decent enough, but is it necessary?
for an artist yea. Dude wants to create music and get in a van and play shows. I'll take it. i wish everyone else had that drive still. not every piece of music needs to be anything more than just good. In fact - i wish more of my favorite artists would be less precious about music and just write, record and go play.

I admire that. I just wish more rock music still felt necessary.

I don't think a point needs to be apparent to justify its existence, certainly not for the audience.
Jeff doesn't owe Pearl Jam fans anything.
EDIT: what strat said.
I didn't mention a 'point', just that I don't find the music very original or interesting. I'd rather listen to Backspacer. But good luck to Jeff, I suppose they all deserve a break from the hard work of being PJ from time to time.

I'm quite sceptical that rock music has ever felt necessary in this sort of way.
Even if it did, it seems a bizarre criticism to level at a side project of the bassist from Pearl Jam.
