I was listening to a lot of Dan Bern today and this song reminded me of parting ways, in terms of its mood and lyrics. I think it's a better song too. Bern's a better writer than eddie, even if he is 1/10 the singer
Anyway, thought i'd share
In God's Time, Not Yours
She said, For all we know time could start moving backwards
I said, For all we know, it always has
We stood there coldly in the kitchen the night she left for good
And I remember silly details, like the dark green ribbon in her hair
The speck of spaghetti sauce on her cheek she didn't know was there
She's gone, she's gone
Never to return to you
And parallel lines eventually meet
In some dark corner of the universe
In God's time, not yours
She said, Do you mind if I keep this sweatshirt?
I said, Go on, it's too small for me, and besides, you look good in it
She said, That's your first compliment in months
She said, Your parents really messed you up
I said, That's their job and stuff I guess
She threw my closet open, put her things into sack
She's gone, she's gone
Never to return to you
And you never meet your dead ancestors
‘cept in some dark corner of the universe
In God's time, not yours
We walked outside I said, It looks like rain
She said, I hate the rain
I said, Well, we could use some
She said, I don't see for what
I said, Well, when it rains it feels like back home in the Midwest
She said, As far as I’m concerned the Midwest could fall off the earth
She's gone, she's gone
Never to return you
And some day all the planets
Will be overwhelmed when the sun explodes
And reappear as angels
In some dark corner of the universe
In God's time, not yours
Some nights I catch myself adding up numbers in my head
I always suspected her of doing that but she denied it and I had no proof
And at such times I go outside cause it's not so poison there
And in the air I smell her air and I think, there's your proof
She's gone, she's gone
Never to return to you
And somewhere all the numbers
Have been counted up and put away
In some dark corner of the universe
In God's time, not yours
She said for all we know time could start moving backwards
I said for all we know it always has
We stood there coldly in the kitchen
The night she left for good….

probably my favorite pj song, and not on a day to day basis
i cant settle on no. 1, but this is song is right near the top..ok, maybe it is at the top
i guess what finally reassured me that this one is number one is the fact that no other pj song can knock the wind out of me after every listen. it kills me; i guess that's how i know. (did i use the semicolon correctly there? )

5 stars easy.
Cal is absolutely right, one of the pj's best ever. As soon as Soon Forget ends, Parting Ways just hits you quietly, but full force. The lyrics are beautiful. I have often refered to this song as a masterpiece and still think it is. It's amazing how just a few lines can paint such a strong and emotional picture. One of the rare songs by any artist that each time I listen to it, I always have to kind of stop and soak it all in and truly listen to the entire song. I prefer the 03 versions just a bit more b/c most of the 2000 versions were too loud/guitar driven at end. Although, Detroit 2000 is excellent. I really like Nashville 03.
Love it, love it love it. Another song off Binaural that is just stellar.
god damn right. this song is an absolute classic pj song. songs like this are what make you realise who shit pj have gone with the last 2 lp's. avacado and its fans can fuck off.
