I dont know if this has been discussed yet, but after watching the Fixer and DTE vids from Calgary the other night, I am surprised by the crowd. That looks like a 1993 crowd, with the young dudes surfing around, hot girls surfing and getting groped...security throwing surfers back into the crowd. The last few shows I have been to, up by the stage was occupied by overweight 30+ stoic looking hard core fans that would probably punch you if you tried to pick them up and move them off "their spot!" I probably would not have been real happy being there for very long, but watching it on video, I think that spirit is maybe a good sign!
but seriously.... it's a festival ( no seniority ticketing) hence the lack of manatees right in front of the stage and it's canada ..so it is like 1994 or some shit up there
PJ didn't look like they were really into the fixer. Ed almost looked like he didn't want to sing it - or like he was half apologizing for the song through his gestures. I thought that was weird.

Yeah...I hadnt really thought of that before I wrote that. I was comparing that crowd to a "regular" show. I guess it was close to being like that at Lolla...I was about 25 yards from the stage, so it was as crazy as that clip seemed by the stage, but it was nuts up close that night too.
And, I couldn't disagree more with you about Ed during the Fixer...he was as into it as any song, what you are doing is projected your distaste for the song onto him. He looks into it in his normal cool, reserved self.

If people want to crowd surf/mosh that's fine, I just don't like it when it's right at the front of the stage, since it's distracting as hell if you're trying to watch the show.

I was bummed to see Boom still with the band.

If Ed really felt that bad about playing the song I highly doubt they would play it at all. He looked fine to me in the video, not crazy into it but certainly not apologetic about the song. Maybe your projecting your feelings about the song onto the band.

Mr. Stip, you are old.
But I feel the same way.

I didn't like it in my 20s either. If you're in a pit or you're crowd surfing you don't need to be right up front since you have other things on your mind than the music.

Munich 2007. More than 10 people were crowd surfed right to the front in the hands of the security guys. Oh and the venue had printed A4 shits of paper outside that said "no crowd surfing".
