because if not, you are not eligible to render a respectable opinion on this album. and that's a fact.
Define REALLY good headphones. I use inexpensive earbuds quite a bit, simply for the reason that they fit inside the ear, unlike larger gear that completely covers the area. Maybe its cause I'm losing my hearing from going to so many concerts, but I think they sound a little better. Fuller... Regardless of what you use though, the best way to get into Binaural is with a piece of glass, fresh water, and a new lighter.

I really have to agree. Regardless of how sonically impressive the disc may be, that doesn't change the actual music. In relation to the entire catalog I find Binaural to fall short on all fronts.
The flow of the album is very uneven and ackward. A lot of the songs are just very forgettable and play like B sides (Evactuation, God's Dice, Rival) and I find the lyrics often seem forced and weak (breakerfall).
There are good songs for sure but I think many Pearl Jam fans strongly prefer the sound and style of other albums.
Using $300 Bose headphones won't change my feelings about this record. It is absolutely my least favorite album. I would rather hear a radio broadcast of Avacado or Yield on a shitty boom box then hear Binaural on professional grade headphones.
my vinyl and my grados make for a great listening experience. there is alot of crap on that record, which of their album don't?, anyway the second half is great and the binaurally recorded songs add alot of dimension when you listen with a nice pair of cans.

that album sucks no matter what....
I don't feel that harshly about it, but I agree that it is one of PJ's lesser albums.
Great headphones don't change the fact that some of the songs are truly awful (namely Breakerfall & Evacuation)

Binarual is defenitely an album that can be enhanced with good headphones. You can actually listen to it and get the details in. this as aposed to Riot act which has an incredibly flat and boring sound no matter what.

To add to my earlier post, I also don't understand why people act like a headphone listen is SO essential. I remember reading a lot of interviews with the band and articles about the album when it came out and all confirmed that less than half the album was actually binaurally recorded. Ok, the dogs growling sounds cool but so what?
I do agree that Of The Girl sounds pretty damn sweet but overall the "binaural" experience is greatly exagerrated. I have done the headphones thing with Binaural it's overratted. The thing is, ANY album sounds better when you listen with headphones, high end models or not. It is inherent in the headphone experience that you hear the more subtle elements of a recording. Shit, if you really want to knock your socks off listen to Avacado on high end headphones. That intro to Inside Job is fucking incredible!
