I've already commented on this song, but its so good that after a couple of more plays I have to put yet another opinion out. When I'm in the right mood, I can listen to it and after hearing Ed sing "I miss you already" have water well up within my eyes. The line is so simple, yet he delivers it in such a fashion that you can feel the longing and desperation in his voice.

Maybe I connect with it on such an emotional level that I am well beyond partial, but I would be bold enough to claim that this is the band's most underrated song. Technically, everything is perfect, and the lyrics are open enough to let the listener decide if its theme is of melancholy or happiness. I perceive it as being extremely sad, but thats just my interpretation.

The first time I listened to No Code, this was the obvious standout track for me. While I grew to love so many of the songs that surround it, "Smile" will always be my favorite. On an album full of great songs, I can see how it would be easy to pass over this one. Everyone should do themselves a favor and grant it the attention it truly deserves.

A solid song but it's in the middle of my list. That I like it but think it's only average says how much I love the band's music.
I think it's played just enough on tour. It always feel like a treat to the hardcore fan when they break it out.
And I must admit I've used the "I miss you already line" a few times myself.

Aw, come on...get your panties out of a bunch.

Smile is underrated.

Smile is my absolute favorite song.

The simplicity of the song, and the way the feel carries the whole thing... The piano.... But most importantly, it helped me through a tough time where when I just felt like crap over a girl....

I'd cut the lights and throw a bunch of softer to medium-heavy PJ songs on the playlist, and this one would always do it for me. It could take a bunch of the weight off, at least for a few hours. This one and I Got Shit.

I'm always amazed at how many other people really love this song, which doesn't seem like an obvious standout to me. But when I went to see them in Nashville in 2003, I had seats next to this couple from Louisville. Chatting it up with them a bit, they asked if there was anything I really wanted to hear.

I told them that "Smile" was my favorite song, and I was hoping to hear it even though they rarely play it. They got a weird look and started laughing. It was also the girlfriend's favorite song and she had wanted to hear it as well.

The whole thing made me smile....

I love this song...it's not in my top 10 for favortie PJ song, but it's a moving and emotional song. I hope I get to hear it live next tour....6 gigs, no "smile". :(

On a side note, you can tell Neil Young really rubbed off on PJ w/ this song maybe more than any other....It feels right that this song was made after Mirror Ball.

When I'm forced to choose this is usually the song I tab as my favorite. I've loved it since the first time I heard it and continue to do so to this day. It's simple lyrically, but powerful at the same time. More than once it's nearly moved me to tears. The music is just fantastic. Each time I see PJ live I'm praying to hear this song.

I also plan to either put this in my will or make it strongly known to my family that I want Smile played at my funeral.

I really dig this song, the vocals are great and Eddie really lets loose but I still have this feeling that there is something missing from this particular tune, but I cannot put my finger on it.

I agree. Sometimes the most simple songs with sincere feeling are what it takes to break us down or make us...smile.

This song can do both for me. Lately it's been able to keep me in a more up mood when I'm feeling down. It's a song that I need nowadays. I love it.

i think it might be: 06/27/98 - Alpine Valley: East Troy, WI

maybe i should re-phrase - "I'd love it IF they closed a show with this"

yeah. you're right about that one. not sure if theyve done it anytime else.

I believe Greensboro 2000 closed with Smile.

Yes, a great song.

However... I excitedly chose Nashville 2000 as one of my bootleg purchases because of Smile on the setlist. I pop it in, and Ed let's some deuchebag fan sing a verse! Errrghhhh....

If I remember correctly he let that fan come up and sing a verse because he was on crutches but still made it to the show. What a douchebag...

Hey now, lighten up... not a literal "douchebag." Just making fun of my dismay when I bought the boot for a live version of Smile.

And, geez, had I known this fan had made it to the show even though he was on CRUTCHES... well, I'm lucky to have this bootleg, given his truly inspirational act that day. I mean, you and I, we'd be sitting at home, "Damn. Was lookin' forward to the PJ show, but I broke my damn ankle. Alas." 8)

It just always makes me *Smiles*
I Love it....
I love the montage on TB2K....
And the guy with the hat on that Ed throws the tambourine to
looks so familiar to me...dunno why tho.. I posted a thread once asking if anyone knew who that guy was..... :)
I never knew the story behind the song either, thats pretty cool too.. :)
I thought one of the guys mustve done the drawing of the hearts and swirls and lyrics for the linear notes...
