4 stars, really really like it, but for me it's just shy of being a PJ masterpiece.
I wish they'd open more gigs with this one.
sometimes->last exit is a great combo opener
Indeed, I have some boots with that. I was at Hershey '03...LBC->Last Exit, that was pretty good. The beginning of Last Exit was awesome..."Lets go! Fuck this fucking chocolate factory." Classic.

What's missing from it?
That's what Im saying... It IS one of the PJ masterpieces.
Nothing is missing from it, I'm just a picky SOB when it comes to 5 star songs. IMO, PJ is loaded with 4 and 3 star songs, and has a few 5 star. But you know, opinions are like assholes...
5 star PJ songs in my mind:
In My Tree Who You Are Tremor Christ Hail Hail Do The Evolution Alive Animal Got Some Immortality Given To Fly Parting Ways Can't Keep Off He Goes State Of Love & Trust
There are a few more that I'd put on that list, but there is really no rhyme or reason to it..."Last Exit" could be a 4.5 star song, but if I had to choose between 4 or 5, I'm going 4. Its a fantastic song, but I guess it doesn't hit me quite like the ones I listed above. For those that think it's a 5 star song, I can't argue with that, it's definitely one of PJ's best, and would make my PJ top 20 list.

that's a pretty sweet list you got there
Thanks! I'd probably have a heart attack if all of those songs made a set list I happened to be attending. One thing that was so damn amazing about Philly 3 for me, is that a lot of those songs I listed did make the set list! I was one happy PJ fan after that show

early performances of htis song are phenomenal. The "let my spirit pass line" is so raw and powerful....you can feel the emotion. Sometimes he conserves his voice now...and that takes some of the edge off the song for me.
I can’t say enough great things about this song. Easily my favorite album opener. From the off key tuning to the crashing opening (some of my favorite work by Dave A) to the desperate ragged energy to the song and its abrupt slamming into a brick wall stop it completely sets the tone for Vitalogy.
I’ve always considered Vitalogy to end with Immortality and in between Last Exit and Immortality you have the struggle to find redemption in music working itself out (especially in Not For You, Corduroy, Bugs, and Satan’s Bed). The tension comes from the fact that the music which should be the source of that redemption is also the source of the problems—can a corrupted art still heal?
I think these are the best lyrics on any of the openers and the first verse especially
Lives opened and trashed "Look ma, watch me crash"... No time to question Why'd nothing last... Grasp and hold on We're dyin' fast... Soon be over... And i will relent...
With the music, vocals, and lyrics you get such a bleak picture painted of a life quickly spiraling out of control, with the singer realizing that he’s lost his essential humanity. He’s just a mask or an idea—no longer a person—and the singer is just aching for release, wanting to burn away in the sun or wash away in the ocean—realizing before the song ends (he hesitates—the day count moves from three to four) that there is one final chance to find some shade or solid ground. His last exit.
Great start to the greatest record of all time
It's like you read my mind

5 stars without a doubt.
I just made a mixed PJ CD for a friend who hates pretty much all the PJ he's heard (which would really only be Ten, Vs and The Fixer). Anyway Last Exit leads the way, then STBC, then Not For You and then Tremor Christ. Can't beat that run of songs. Turns out the 18 track comp has 7 Vitalogy tracks. It rocks.

For the PJ haters (aka folks that don't know shit about the band), I find a nice dose of Vitalogy, No Code, and Yield can change their minds.
