Once again, apologies if this type of thread has already been done.
But I was asked this question by one of my peers. He asked, Why are you so in love with Pearl Jam?

So, I put this question to you good folks on the Red Mosquito Board.
Why do you love Pearl Jam so much, why do they stand out some much?

For me, its a range of things, The sound they produce is obviously one contributer, but Pearl Jam is different. They make each song different, yet strangely make it seem their own. The transition we have seen from Ten to Riot Act, and the sound of each album has changed each and every album, and yet, still sound like the good old Jam that we know. But, where I find myself most enjoyed at their music is their lyrical talent. Every song is well constructed, so that not every line has a ryming word than the last previous line. The sing about stuff that matters and is meaningful, and that people can apply certain aspects and experiences of their life to. Not like Good Charlotte and others who sings about what girls and boys like. (No offence to all you Good Charloote fans out there).

Thats just my opinion.
Whats yours?

For me...

1st the Music -
Next, the combined conscience and awareness the band has concerning their various "causes" - all of which I share a concern for - how they use what they are lucky enough to have, for the benefit of these causes and for those that have less..

to me, it is mainly because of the passion eddie has amazingly shown throughout the many years they have been together toward his music and his fans, along with his voice and PJ's lyrics. He is kinda sexy too.

it is hard to define and this may sound corny but quite simply, they touch my soul like no other band has.

I think, for me, it has more to do with the impression that I get of PJ being one of the last few honest mainstream bands out there. They aren't out to please MTV or clear channel...they aren't out to put out every kind of merchandise available simply because they know people are sheep and will buy it.

They care about their fans (umm bootlegs upon bootlegs...and is there a better fanclub than Tenclub...though I'm not a member) and don't seem to have forgotten where they came from. They make music for themselves...for the sake of making music...not making money.

Couple that with the fact that they often play live shows that hit around 2 hours...they don't just come out...throw some pyrotechnics out...play all their hits and then leave.

I guess, in short, they are everything that the modern band is not. Add that to the fact that they are one of the stronger bands, musically speaking, again one of the things that modern bands are not, and you have why I feel the way that I do about PJ.

I knew that I heard Pearl Jam differently than most when I was the only one I knew who was excited about No Code when it was released.

I was having a discussion with a co-worker about music and, he not being a Pearl Jam fan, does appreciate the Ticketmaster fight they did back in the 90's. However, music for him needs to be fun, with little to no message in the song. Basically, if it has a good beat, then he is game. I understand that mind set. I too like a lot of different songs by various artists just because it is a "fun" song. But, with Pearl Jam it goes much deeper for me. He (my co-worker) pointed out something that I didn’t realize. What makes Pearl Jam so special to me is the personal connection I feel with them. The Fact that no 2 shows they do are alike. That makes it more of a personal experience for me, unlike when I saw Rush this last summer, not as personal. I knew what their set list was going to be weeks before I went and saw them. You can never say that about an upcoming Pearl Jam show. The fact that Pearl Jam never tries to write a “radio hitâ€

i totally agree: upper level rock music quality; truth in the songs and performances; integrity, as individuals and as a band; the stand up and be counted attitude; Ed's absofuckinlutely beautiful strong voice. if the new millenium needed a spokesman (i believe it does, we live a time so similar to the sixties, without Woodstock; and more changes are to come in the next thirty years, i hope moving us to a better human civilization), well, they're the safety buoy in the sea of mediocrity.
