I know we all love Pearl Jam and adore their catalogue, but seriously, think about this for a second. Look at each album as a non PJ freak and see honestly how many albums you would rate at 5 stars (out of 5, obviously), claiming it to be a flawless or damn near flawless mastierpiece in recent rock music. I came to the conclusion that there are three:
TEN - Still just as incredible of listen as it was 15 years ago.
VS - The pressure was on and they manned up. One hell of a follow-up
YIELD - No Code getting all of the tune-ups it needed.
How I rate the others?
VITALOGY (4.5) - Filler kills this one. Truthfully, I don't know if I have ever listened to the disturbing closing track all the way through.
NO CODE (4.5) - Bad flow on this album. Still very listenable from start to finish.
Binaural (4) - Very underrated album in their catalogue if you ask me.
Riot Act (3) - Too many songs I don't like and too long of an album. Love ya Matt, but stick with the drumkit and let the other guys write the music. Well...I guess "You Are" isn't so bad. But boy did Jeff ever shit the bed with "Help Help"
So...how many PJ albums would you give a 5 star rating to?

All 5 - no exceptions. Some albums may be better than others but these differences seem tiny considering what other bands have released in the last 15 years. In other words nothing comes close to PJ!

If you want to wind yourself before a big game reading the AMG review of Yield should do the trick.
Awk well, at least we know it's the best album ever recorded.
I don't think Yield is a five star album but that review is a bit off.

Vs.-4.5 stars
Vitalogy-5 stars
No Code-3.5 stars
Yield-4 stars
Binaural-3.5 stars
Riot Act-3.5 stars
Lost Dogs-4 stars.
Pearl Jam needs one more truly five star/epic albums to be remembered as one of the all time great bands. Here's hoping the new one will be it.

I disagree with that. Pearl Jam is my favorite band of the 90s and they have been pretty consistent, but come on...they don't have all 5 star albums. If I were to list my top 10 albums of 1991, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002...PJ might appear at the top of two lists.

Which lists would that be? 1991, 1993, 1994? The funny thing is that while there were many great albums in the early 90s, the last 10 years or so were pretty meager imo. So PJ's role as the absolute No1 (for me) just got stronger and clearer over the years.
This might belong to the "Other Bands" forum but what other really great international albums were there?

1994 certainly, and 1991. I'd have to look at what came out in 93 to be sure. Yield could take 98. There wasn't much I liked in 2000 and 2003 but if PJ is number 1 that year it is because there was little competition.

Of the bands/albums you mentioned...
I really like Coldplay but their music is too neat for my taste to compete with PJ. They just don't cover as much ground as PJ, if that makes any sense. Still their beautiful and highly refined songs certainly make Coldplay one of the best international bands of the last few years.
The others i don't know enough to comment on them. Some of them i've never even heard of
