ooo, look what it toss at ya.
K maybe its a little too broad of a statement but...
Alot of people who dont play music, guitar drums, whatever...in my opinion (at least the ones i come across) MISS alot of whats going on in songs...
maybe its just because those are the people who dont listen to music religiously like me, so perhaps it has nothing to do with being somewhat of a musician. however, is there some truth to it?

If you are a musican and play the drums you focus on the drums bass focus on bass etc.
If you are totally untalented (like me) you appreciate everybit of the song, the music the melodies everything and become and expert on the whole song.
I think there is some truth to that. I started to play guitar in college, and within weeks, songs just started to sound differently to me. Mostly in a good way. You can anticpate where things are going the first time you hear a song. But of course when you are at a concert, you can pick up mistakes a hell of a lot easier.

Certianly someone who plays may appreciate parts of songs that more casual listeners will miss, but in the end the best music is the stuff that moves you, and you don't need any musical talent for that to happen. I agree that greater technical knowledge can possibly enhance a song for someone.

i'm a musician but i would say that i listen to music very emotionally. sure, i listen to what the band technically plays, but it's more than a chord progression or a groove, it's the talent of a band to develop this band feeling, this energy which gets me goosebumps...
I learned to appreciate and also write off bands as I learned how to play guitar and I learned who actually was doing some amazing stuff. It sounds funny, but I still will not go near a Van Halen song--great guitar work.
