Are there two drum tracks laid over the top of one another? All the hits sound echoed and a little bit rough. When he opens the hi-hat, it sounds like one, and then a second one with just a bit of delay.

It sounds to me like two tracks, and I might just assume that now, but I wanted to know if Matt or somebody ever talked about it anywhere.

Fuckin A! I knew I wasn't going crazy. I was thinking the same thing when I put on headphones to it. I thought it was reverb from the studio acoustics or something.
My guess is that the sound from the hi-hat somehow reaches the mic for the snare, thus causing the echo effect. If that's the case, shame on poor production.

Nah, I like it. A crisp snare tends to bug me.

It's probably just got a lot of delay and reverb on it.

I'm just the opposite. I dislike the flat, dull, non-musical sound of a loose snare. Tune it up! Get some tone!

For the amount of time they spent in the studio, I'd guess its a production effect, but with this band's history and willingness to indulge in progressive recording techniques, it wouldn't surprise me if Matt pulled out the ace he always seems to have up his sleeve.

I think the overall sound of this record is the best they've done, possibly ever, but I hope and pray that one day Ten is remastered.

I don't think the drumming on wws is as strong as it is on the rest of the album.

It's just reverb.

Yeah, I agree, it's very straightforward. But the song itself is very straightforward, so it fits.

Pearl Jam essentially writes 4/4 rock tunes. Soundgarden was known for odd time signatures and such, which is probably what made for his "soundgarden-ish style." It wouldn't really fit with what PJ does.
