That's the rumour on the intraweb, that Pearl Jam have signed with J Record and Clive David.
If the Velvet Rope is to be believed, this is the case. The rope is only sometimes correct, and lots of BS gets thrown around but I fail to see where this would have come from otherwise.
According to one poster, there is already a TBD date for a new single and funding lined up to promote it.
J Records being the newest major (or a "boutique" label) with major support seems like a good home for Pearl Jam. Clive Davis certainly seems to know what he's doing. He was the head of Arista while the Grateful Dead were signed to them.
Clive Davis has absolutely done NOTHING good for music over the last ten years, unleashing such atrocities as Santana's Supernatural and Alicia Keys onto the world. Here's an interesting article detailing what goes into the creation of an act on Davis's label, J Records.
I understand his place in music history, but there's no one and no label more corporate than this guy. Seems like an odd place to go for a band with such business ethics.

If you understand music you would say that Alicia Keys is a great artist... not my music either, but her voice and what she brings with it is amazing

I do understand music and I also understand that she hasn't made a classic album yet. To call her a "great artist" is puzzling. Selling millions of CDs doesn't make you great, just popular. (Even though there were plenty of rumors flying around that J Records were the ones actually buying a lot of the CDs in an effort to spur album sales)

Indeed. Read my linked article for some evidence. No label president has his hands on or in all the artists on a label like Davis.

i read, carefully, 2/3 of the article and the end. it seemed to me that the guys were playing with a doll, dressing her, and all. hard to picture her as a person. that's why i'm planning to open my own label for my band, home studio style. and use the internet for distribution. i'd like it to be about the music, not about the money. am i naive? probably. a woman can dream, right? and dreams can be a good thing, right? so said the good man...
nobody, particularly members of pearl jam should do any bitching about sony/epic...while with that label pearl jam was given a MOUNTAIN of creative latitude and career control. I would venture to guess that every other major label would have told pearl jam, after the success of Ten, get on board the PR machine or we will toss your contract out to the wind.
Honestly if they do anything other than independence and bidding each individual record to willing labels, to me leaving sony was a hollow and shallow gesture done because they could, not because they needed to.
in the end the only thing that will matter is whether they can continue to release credible art.

You are correct! Any label that allows a band to release a song like "Bugs" on a major record is pretty cool and allows their artists to do what they want. Sony aint that bad. They make a great HDTV!

meh. This was rumored ages ago, and it didn't happen. I would bet money that any deal they do get is purely for distribution.

Does anyone know anything about the deal? How did Pearl Jam end up with J? Why not go back with epic? Im kind of curious how it all played out, and i havent read anything about it. Thanks.

epic and j records are both owned by sony, so it wasn't much of a change. it'll be interesting to see how j records promotes this album.
