the Lo2L version is the best.

Your thinking of the song "Unknown Legend". "Off he goes" is obviously an "Homage" to it, they're virtually the same song. It took me a few yrs to get that out of my head whenever I heard "Off he goes", even though PJ's song is one of my fave's.

there was a nice unknown legend cover up this week for the cover contest. Worth checking out

You know, I've been listening to Unknown Legend (one of my favorite modern Neil tracks) for years, as I have Off He Goes, and I never even noticed this. Good job.

I hear little melodic or sonic similarity, and they're in different keys.
Well not just myself but 3 friends of mine who are musicians laugh at how similiar they are when they play each song back to back. This is not a knock on PJ, but what I think was a diliberate attempt to honor Neil. They had just played on his "Mirrorball" album and had completed "Merkinball". Even the guitars on "Smile" have a HUGE Neil Young feel. I mean even the HARLEY DAVIDSON/MOTERBIKE references on UL and OFG are well......speak for themselves. The first second i heard this song I thought oh wow.....this sounds like Unknown Legend.

I'm not arguing that it isn't influenced, or that Neil isn't all over No Code, but not as strongly as most people (including me) have tended to think.
Off He Goes has Neil's print all over it. But Unknown Legend is all over the G chord and dashed with A-string phrasing. Off He Goes opens in F, emphasizes A minor for the hook (A minor never shows up in Unknown Legend, unless my tabbing is wrong), and essentially uses standard low-string picking that has more to do with Pearl Jam's rock influences than anything.
The Neil influence, in my mind, is the "here's the one take" philosophy of record it, change nothing, fix nothing, go by feel. The lyrics, the approach to the background vocal harmony, and the lo-fi recording all have a Young-like feel as well. But the guitar and/or vocals themselves are more a tribute in style than actual approach.

Fair enough and well said.............as long as I'm partially right......I can live with that.

I heard off he goes was about neil. though I still think its a third person narrative about eddie, which to me, despite what they neysayers may think, is a great idea.
