Pearl Jam is my favorite band but I find myself not really able to get into any of their favorite artists (Tom Waits, The Who, Neil Young, etc). Is Mirrorball a good listen for a Pearl Jam fan or do you have to like Neil Young? I know it's a really subjective question but after all these years I'm thinking of tracking this CD down...

It sounds like a Neil Young record, not a PJ record.
If you don't like NY, you will not like it.
I do not like NY, and don't care much for the record. What AS says is true. If you aren't really familiar with Neil Young this might be a safe place to start.

The record is NY backed by Pearl Jam, meaning they're his Crazy Horse for this album. If you wanna hear the bass, guitar, and drums of Pearl Jam from the No Code era with NY singing over it, then check this out. I think Eddie has only a couple vocal lines on one song, "Peace and Love," nothing more (which is why he didn't tour for this album. It was only Jeff, Stone, Mike, Jack, & Brendan O'Brien). The tunes overall are kinda cool, but like a lotta people, I'm not a terribly huge NY fan, although this album is fun to listen to. Highlights for me are "I'm The Ocean," "Throw Your Hatred Down," and "What Happened Yesterday (since this last tune is now "Wasted Reprise" )

I AM a huge Neil Young fan, but I wouldn't put this album in my top ten of Neil's albums.
That said, the lyrics on this album are his best of the 90's, and PJ adds a really thick, rich backing sound to Neil (3 guitars, and a bass player who can keep up).
In the end though, it is a Neil Young album.

its not among his top echelon stuff but i do think its the last really good album front to back that he's put out (not counting year of the horse)

it's a great disc imo. Big Green Country and Peace and Love are kick ass tunes. Definitely not Pearl Jam, though. It is Neil Young through and through, although I do seem to like this album in a much different way than most of NY's music.
I know its sort of scariledge for Neil fans, but this is one of my favorite Neil records. Most Neil fans will say that if it doesn't have Crazy Horse on it, it's not the same, but I think the band plays so well behind Neil and their energy and excitement is evident in the songs which tend to be groove-oriented riff-rock soundscapes with Neil's stream of consciousness type lyrics. I just think it kicks ass. They should collaborate again.

a majority of the music is repetitive and can get boring the more you listen to it, but that being said i love the one song that definately basically just has repetitive chords for 6 minutes (i'm the ocean) and i really like this album.
highlights:
song x
i'm the ocean
big green country
truth be known
downtown(which i'm sure you've heard already)
peace and love
throw your hatred down

It's a good enough album...maybe not in his top 10 but 15 anyway, which is something for that guy. And I think the lyrics on Sleeps with Angels are better.

For the record, I think Mirrorball is 12th on my list.

It's a decent record, but I don't listen to it very often. Then again it was my first introduction to Neil Young. I always liked the introduction to Song X though, great guitar tone.

I am a light NY fan. Other than his hits, this is where I started and now I have a bunch of his stuff, mostly on vinyl.
I really really like Mirrorball. I would never be able to notice that PJ was tha backing band unless someone told me, but it is the reason I bought it.
