Is Pearl Jam an environmentally conscious band? Or do they just pay lip service to the environment?

I ask because I saw in a thread someone saying that PJ is environmentally conscious as a band. I find this kind of hard to swallow.

PJ sells a conspicuous consumption type product. They don't use the most environmentally friendly means of distributing the product. They are flying to England to so just one show and some press. They make their living driving to places in decidedly un-eco-friendly buses and rigs. Once in a town they create a large amount of noise pollution and consume enough energy to power your house for a year.

I love the fact that they tour but I also realize it is an entirely un-eco-friendly way to live. At best PJ is very hit and miss an their enviro record.

Thoughts?

Yeah, I saw what Stone said in the promo. He should take a look at what he does for a living. I thought he was pretty hypocritical to tell you the truth. He came across in a "my shit doesn't stink" kind of way.

well i dont think they are gonna do anything that hurts the band to save the environment. i think they can try to limit their effect on the environment and still do whats best for the band.

I forget all the specifics, but on their last two tours, I believe they've donated money to preserve an amount of rainforest comparable to what would be negatively affected by the environmental damage their tours "cause." Or something like that.

They're fully aware of their touring's impact upon the environment.

I think I agree with this. They're not willing to make any sacrifices or do much in the conservation of energy. But within that framework they do what they can.
Question, is that the moves of an environmentally conscious band or just how they average person goes about life?

Does "carbon neutral" do anything about the global warming pollution created?
Are you sure about the tour being carbon neutral? I thought the album was carbon neutral but don't remember the tour being that way.

To say they aren't making sacrifices is ridiculous.

They would save incredible amount if they didn't look how they distribute music, how they travel and the hundreds of thousands (most likely millions) of dollars they donate to environmental causes. One band not flying to England wouldn't help the environment much. However, one band donating money and spreading the word of conservation to millions of people is much more effective.

It's like you are arguing for the sake of arguing.

No, I think their goal was to contribute funding/support to other causes to offset their negative impact in recognization of the fact that their touring negatively impacts the environment.
