Does anyone know what this means? Did Epic sell rights to Pearl Jam's music? Is this a new distribution deal? Is it just a deal for international distribution? I don't really get it.

Kobalt has signed to three long-term worldwide exclusive administration deals (ex US) with Pearl Jam.
By Charlotte Otter

The move finds the publisher look after any future works by the grunge band as well as the groups first two albums, Ten and vs. Kobalt will additionally represent lead singer Eddie Vedder’s solo catalogue and any future works by the writer.

In 2012, the rest of Pearl Jam’s back catalogue, including the albums, Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, Pearl Jam, Backspacer, will move to the publisher.

Kobalt CEO and founder Willard Ahdritz, thanked SVP of business development Merril Wasserman, for her role in the deal and adds, “We’re extremely proud and honored to be working with Pearl Jam and look forward to a long relationship with new releases and other exciting activity planned for their 20th anniversary in 2011.”

Executives involved in the deal included Willard Ahdritz; Elliot J. Groffman of Carroll, Guido & Groffman, attorney for Pearl Jam; Kelly Curtis of Curtis Management, manager for Pearl Jam; Jamie Cheek of Flood, Bumstead, McCready & McCarthy, business manager for Pearl Jam; and Michele Anthony, consultant to Pearl Jam and their label, Monkeywrench Records.

Well the last two albums seemed to have the most problems with worldwide distribution. Not problems that prevented the album from getting to the fans worldwide, but I remember reading articles and interviews saying they had the most problem figuring out the logistics for foreign distribution. This deal probably just takes care of all that for future releases. And on top of it they seemed to have gotten Sony involved to sell rights to the previous albums.

Kobalt's administration infrastructure provides clients with fast, transparent and accurate royalty collection from a complex web of transactions around the globe. It is:

* Direct - on average 85% of royalties are collected directly from end users or societies, with no other intermediaries. As a result royalties are often paid out 50% faster than the traditional publishing model
* Global - millions of music users around the world are covered
* Electronic - wherever possible information is exchanged electronically increasing accuracy and reducing the loss of income that results from errors
* Automatic - removing the errors from manual processes
* Unique - Kobalt's systems were developed in-house and are not licenced to any other party
* Centralised - all information is stored in one database reducing replication and duplication errors and enabling comprehensive cross- referencing to facilitate extremely powerful royalty tracking

Not only is more money collected more quickly first time as a result, but the integrated and comprehensive information stored allows Kobalt to carry out value-based royalty tracking on a much larger scale to ensure that all owners of rights are better off with Kobalt. Kobalt gives detailed and comprehensive information to clients, allowing a better understanding of their income and a higher level of comfort that they are being paid correctly.

Publishing rights really doesn't have anything to do with distribution, as far as I know. This company basically just collects the money every time someone plays PJ on the radio, or in a jukebox, etc.

PEARL JAM SIGN EXCLUSIVE WORLDWIDE ADMINISTRATION (EX−US) DEALS WITH KOBALT
NEW YORK (November 18, 2010) − On the cusp of their 20th anniversary, Pearl Jam, one of the most popular and influential bands in the world, has concluded three long-term worldwide exclusive administration deals (excluding the U.S.) with leading global independent publisher Kobalt Music Group (Kobalt).

The announcement was made today by Willard Ahdritz, CEO and Founder of Kobalt.

Through the agreements, Kobalt will immediately begin administration of Pearl Jam's forthcoming new material, and assume administration of their first two multi−million selling global smash albums, Ten and vs. In addition, Kobalt will administer all of lead singer/songwriter Eddie Vedder's solo catalog including his critically−acclaimed soundtrack to Into The Wild and the song "Better Days" from the Eat Pray Love soundtrack, plus new solo works. In 2012, the rest of Pearl Jam's entire back catalog (featuring the albums Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, Pearl Jam, Backspacer) will move to Kobalt.

As part of the new relationship, Kobalt will additionally handle synch licensing and promotion of Pearl Jam repertoire and Eddie Vedder solo repertoire for use in motion pictures, TV advertising, games, ringtones, and other media.

"We're extremely proud and honored to be working with Pearl Jam and look forward to a long relationship with new releases and other exciting activity planned for their 20th anniversary in 2011,"said Ahdritz, "I'd like to also acknowledge Merril Wasserman, our Sr. VP Business Development, who was instrumental in executing this deal on behalf of Kobalt."

Forthcoming releases from Pearl Jam include a new compilation album, Live On Ten Legs (Island Records), which is set for release internationally on January 17, 2011. Also planned in 2011 are re−packaged, re−issues of vs. and Vitalogy.

The interesting info here is, Vs. and Vitalogy are planed for re-release next year along with other "exiting" activity and more Ed solo stuff at some point.

I didn't buy the Ten box set, but I would be the first in line for a Vitalogy reissue.

Music publishers, like BMI or ASCAP collect royalties for artists for anytime their songs are played on the radio, commercials, at a bar, whatever. This deals sounds like these guys will do this for the band and Ed's entire catalog internationally.

This is a very kick ass deal. We as fans are going to benefit greatly from this move.

I think its safe to say that many shows from the vault will be seeing the light of day.

I got a months pay on 4-12-1994 coming out in some fashion officially next year.

Mark my words
