The one on the Jeremy single is from Rockline (which i remember tuning in to). The one on Lost Dogs is the rockline version with a dubbed harmonica (weird to overdub on a live version) Did they ever do it in the studio?

I've asked this question before, and the answer I got was that no studio version has ever surfaced. I guess there could be one but I don't think anyone knows for sure.

I'm probably wrong, but I, too, thought they were the same versions, but now I think I hear some differences in Ed's delivery. They are both amazing. Am I wrong about them not being the same?

I'm pretty sure you are correct about being wrong.

I always thought that the Lost Dogs version was studio. I guess you really do learn something new every day, no matter how fanatical you are about a given subject. ;)

While we're on the topic of different versions of songs, could someone explain to me the need for two different versions of Alone (Lost Dogs and Go single). Both versions have different lyrics. I can't comment with any certainty on the differences musically as I can't remember hearing the Go recording. However, if the Go single recording sounds anything like the live version from that time period, then it sounds musically identical to Lost Dogs, just with different lyrics.

stone wrote the music and TotD recorded it first. No studio version of footsteps has ever surfaced. The version on lost dogs is the live version with the harmonica overdubbed

The muisc for alone on Lost Dogs is similar to the version they demoed for the ten sessions--they reworked the song for the go single, but I believe it kept the same lyrics. Ed redid some of the vocals for the old songs on lost dogs (see hold on, for instance) so they wouldn't sound too dated, but why he changed the lyrics is why asking why americans voted for bush twice. sometimes people do stupid shit.

Also 'Dirty Frank' has different lyrics on Lost Dogs then it did on the 'Evenflow' single.

The "Footsteps" version on the Mamasan demo is about as close as you'll get to a fully fleshed out studio version. Not the best version of the song either. :(.

God bless,

Jared

Correct. It's the same music as "Times of Trouble" but with a piano as well. Stone was working on the song and put it on the tape that Eddie sent back with the Mamasan trilogy, and gave another copy to Chris Cornell in case he wanted to do something with it. So we have Footsteps, about a guy on death row, and Times of Trouble, about a heroin addict battling suicidal thoughts (not sure if it was written specifically with Andy Wood in mind like Say Hello 2 Heaven and Reach Down).

When the spoon it hot
And the needle's shot
And you drift away
I can hear you say
That the world in black
Is upon your back
And your body shakes
So you ditch away
And you close the shades

Don't try to do it
Don't try to kill your time
Yeah, you might do it,
But then you can't change your mind
You've got to hold on to your time
Til you break
Through these times of...
Trouble

When you try to talk
And the words get hard
And they put you down
Don't you stay
Don't you ditch away

I saw you swinging
Yeah, swinging your mother's sword, oh...
Yeah, I know you're playin'
Oh, sometimes the rules get hard, oh...

But if somebody left you...
Out on the ledge...
If somebody pushed you...
Over the edge...
You've gotta hold on to your time
And pray through these times of...
Trouble

I saw you swinging
Yeah, swinging your mother's sword, oh...
Yeah, I know you're playin'
Oh, sometimes the rules get hard, oh...

But if somebody left you...
Out on the ledge...
If somebody pushed you...
Over the edge...
If somebody loved you...
And left you for dead...
You've gotta hold on to your time
And pray through these times of...
Trouble

Hmmm, I didn't know about Hold On either, which is suprising since it's one of my favourite Lost Dogs tracks (and they'd better play it live eventually). I checked The Sky I Scrape but I could only find the Lost Dogs version referenced. Do you have any more info? Perhaps a copy of the demo (not sure the rules on asking for unpublished recordings)?

I guess that's two original versions I haven't heard, unless Alone live counts as the "original", as well. In that case, it's only Hold On. Still, I feel so ashamed.

I don't think anyone outside the band heard Hold On before Lost Dogs came out.
