Notice the lyrics in Comatose:

"with no fear of falling"

Then, in Severed Hand, as the guy is getting ready to take a hit of something, he says "I've no fear but for falling down."

People are afraid to take drugs because it could make one comatose, but once someone is comatose, they have nothing to fear. Interesting paradox.

i really thing is not a paradox, is more like a feeling... i was afraid of taking drugs till i did it and found out it was better than i thought... the point is... falling down is not about a failure is more about loosing control... once you had control or you keep control then you start to found out what is "all the noise's all about"

after all... we are all wasted... :D

welcome to the board. :) The falling theme is important but I don't think comatose is a drug reference. The same lyric appears in parachutes and one or two other places (I think)

I would have to agree with jacinto here. I think it is more a symbol for losing control or in the case of Severed Hand purposefully giving up that control.

I also wonder if the "falling down" references have anything to do with the ultimate fall?

Pffft.

Anyway, I think that Severed Hand should have been the opener to this album.

I really don't think so. Other than "...i'll break the law, if it's illegal to be in love, leave the hatred on the cross.", i don't see how the song has anything to do with gay marriage.

here i wrote this a while ago when i first thought about it. its all subjective though

warehouse wrote:
after thinking about it, the whole song could be about gays in america. "consider me an object"-not a person w/ emotions and human rights. maybe ed's saying that people in america dont consider gays humans w/ human rights, but objects. the "hanging upside down" could be describing how a gay person might feel b/c they are being looked down upon by some for simply their sexual preference.

with that said, i might think this song is about something completely different tomorrow.

i thought the same thing, but what does that have to do with "feel it rising, yeah next stop falling, feel it rising comatose with no fear of falling" as for gay marriage however, i saw a similar theme in the lyrics "with the living let what is living love so unforgiving yet needing frogivness first" those lyrics make work in a song about the christian right in "marker" but im still not too sure about the comatose meaning.

I think Comatose is about American apathy. Just leave me alone. Let me live in my little vaccuum. I don't care about falling (or anything else) ... but when you "wake up" there are consequences.

However, with that in mind, I have no idea how the bridge ("i'll break the law ... etc") fits into that.

You're on to something--so is warehouse (with the bridge).
