for the anal audiophiles such as myself...
the new record, while really good, doesn't have the best production ever imo (it's a bit more raw than i'd like), but i'd take it over Binaural, Ten, & maybe Riot Act's production. curious what people's thoughts are on the best produced/sounding PJ record.
mine (in order):
Vitalogy (easily PJ's best sounding record all around, drums & the low end have never sounded better on ANY PJ record imo. the highs were nice and crisp as well. still sounds fresh today 12 years later)
Yield (my FAVORITE PJ production, but i'll admit Vitalogy does sound better overall. Yield has such a warm sound, love it)
No Code
Vs.
Pearl Jam
Riot Act
Binaural
Ten (everything was totally overcompressed and Ed's vocals have way too much reverb, sounds so damn dated now)
Binaural, but only on certain songs. I don't think it works very well for 'Breakerfall' and a few others, but on songs like 'Nothing as It Seems' and 'Of The Girl' it's incredible.
Overall though I'd probably say No Code. Everything sounds great. when 'Hail Hail' hits after 'Sometimes', it's like a punch in the face.

Of The Girl does sounds great.
what are the 2 tracks that were recorded Binaural-y again? Soon Forget and something else that i'm forgetting...
They each have their good points and bad. I prefer Yield's production, especially considering I love some warm sounding albums, but hats off to O'Brien for Vs. - despite the production being somewhat busy he keeps the feel alive, especially with all the intros and so on.

Haven't heard the new record top to bottom yet (holding out) - that being said:
I agree with the top 3 of Vitalogy, Yield & No Code. Vitalogy succeeds unlike any other record in sustaining a moodiness and rawness to the sound from start to finish.
"Of the Girl" & "Nothing As It Seems" approach great heights as well. If only the rest of the record sounded this good.
And for their next record, they should either go back to O'Brien or do something radically different like Nigel Godrich or Daniel Lanois. After the relatively mainstream accessibility of the new album I feel it's experiment time.

WORD!
hell, if they have to release a fairly experimental record under a diff name, or issue it as an EP, i don't care.

1-Vs.
2-Vitalogy
3-Yield
after that I can't really decide.

Vs. does have killer drums and pretty sweet guitars, but can't help but feel it still has a bit of the overproduced/glossy feel of Ten (albeit not even remotely as bad).

I think this is exactly how I would rank them, except maybe Vs. and No Code switched. And the new one might be equal with Yield, gonna have to wait and hear the official CD quality.
