I hate reading a Pearl Jam review and always having to learn their biography again. I know about Andy Wood, the Demo tape, ticketmaster, etc. Just shut up and review the CD, DVD whatever already.

For their earlier stuff, yeah the biography gets old but sometime it is needed because it sheds light onto the casual fan what was going on with the band when they wrote and recorded it.

An interesting tidbit....each member of Pearl Jam crawled out of a vagina.

I love reviews--even ones I don't agree with. Since my fiancee and most of my good friends are not really big music fans I am usually starved for any discussion of it. Granted it is a one way discussion, but a discussion none the less

Why read the reviews? Consider all reviews in magazines, newspapers, etc. to be for the casual fan, and come here to get the good review. No one on this board will banter on about their history. You can get the poop from real fans!

this is true, but a lot of the times I prefer to read PJ reviews from people that are not as hard-core as some of the people on this board. I mean if PJ took a dump and put it in a CD case, a lot of the people here would say it's the album of the year.

or failing that, at least yell at those who bothered to post negative thoughts, and attack their sincerity as fans for doing so

I bitch about how much it sucks, but I'd still buy it. After all, I own Bayleaf.

...of the new album has to say that it's different from Ten?
No shit! It was 15 years ago. You don't see Chili Peppers reviews saying Stadium Arcadium is different from Freaky Styley. Or U2's latest lacks a certain something that you can find in Boy.
Sure, mention how it's progressed (or not) from Riot Act, but biggest selling album or not, any band worth their salt is going to change sounds from their debut SEVEN ALBUMS AGO.
Yea, I hear what you're saying. If it sounds very similar to Ten, then sure, mention that. But it's kind of pointless ot be like "this album is completely different from the album they recorded 15 years ago." Compare it to Riot Act and Binaural so that people actually have a decent idea of how their sound has progressed.

But most people (and in some cases many reviewers) aren't familiar enough with Binaural or Riot Act to make that a reasonable comparison. When people hear "Pearl Jam" most of them still think of Ten. It's not a suprise then that a reviewer would mention that, even if it's kind of ridiculous to even have to point out that a band may have changed their sound after 15 years.
