I posted this on the pearl jam forums, only one soul could give me a reason. Anyone here care to get in the ring?

First let me preface by saying on the activism link "Outfoxed" is suggested viewing.
Now then can someone give me a rational explanation as to why Pearl Jam is on myspace? I found that News Corp. now owns Intermix Media which ownes myspace. And who is the chair of News Corp.? Rupert Murdoch, here is an article on this neocon in case you wanna catch up it's from a couple years ago.

How can this band agree to be in on this, this man IS the epitome of everything I though this band was against. Yet it is o.k. to use a media outlet he owns as a means to get your music out?
When I first heard this I couldn't believe it, but there it is. Sleeping with the
Enemy was not only a crap flick it should be the name of this record/tour.
I know there are gonna be those that say "what's the big deal"...well to me it is at least something to ponder. I know you may not be realistically be able to avoid all things associated with this "man", but to do so with intent on gaining something for yourself is troubling.

People care waaaaaay too much about stuff these days.

Is this really worth getting worked up over?

Fair enough, if you subscribe to the views held by the powers that be at fox. But PJ never gave any inclination that Rupert Murdoch would be someone they would do business with. Yet another sign of the apocalypse in my book.

if you wanted you could trace almost ANY internet media outlet to some kind of ownership / JV / alliance structure with big media like time warner, diseny, news corp, viacom etc. thats life, i personally dont care.

Not to get off topic but not caring about the media and it's practices is one of the reasons for the state of this country today. My issue here is the mixed signals. You suggest people view a film that shows this person for what he is, then take part in one of his ventures.

Think of it like this. By not going on myspace Pearl Jam is making a statment, but then again, so what? It's not like the ticketmaster thing when something could theoretically change as a result of their stance. On the other hand, they are a socailly progressive band, and if more people are exposed their music more people will be exposed to those ideas

So are you saying that in order to be on MySpace, you have to agree with Rupert Murdoch?

It's not like they are directly conrtibuting to Murdoch, Myspace is free to join, personally i hate it but not b/c of Murdoch although he doesnt make matters better. I kno that in a way PJ is supporting him by joining because it may cause people to look at advertisements on the site, but i just think they are doin it so that their music can be spread through different communities. I highly doubt they are doing it to support Murdoch and his company.

I've never been to PJ's myspace page (I try to avoid myspace altogether), but I'm sure that if they didn't have an "official" page, there'd be plenty of poser pages.

Bingo - I think of it as the band using a big corporation's own tools against them.
