Post subject:  Song of the Moment: I return to find an open door

Lukin

Drive down the street, can't find the keys to my own fucking home
I take a walk, so I can curse my ass for being dumb
I make a right after the arches, stinking grease and bone
Stop at the supermarket, people stare like I'm a dog

I'm goin' to Lukin's...
I got a spot at Lukin's...
I knock the door at Lukin's...
Open the fridge, now I know life is worth

I find the key, but I return to find an open door
Some fucking freak who claims I fathered, by rape, her own son
I find my wife, I call the cops, this day's work's never done
The last I heard the freak was purchasing a fucking gun

Lukin is a cathartic response to the frustration of being a celebrity and the frustrated desire to just be a normal person and live a normal life. Even when you’re Eddie Vedder, sometimes you just want to relax and have a beer. It’s those normal human acts that keep us sane.

Lukin is fun for what it is. It’s a nice angry riff and the songs ends before it gets repetitive. I’d rather have seen all night or black red yellow take its spot on No Code, but those two aren’t quite doing what Lukin is, so it probably wouldn’t have worked. Live I don’t care much for it unless they are using it to lead into not for you, in which case I love it.

This could have fit nicely on Vitalogy (same with Red Mosquito)

Best version ever is the acoustic one from Benyaroya. I wish they do more of the harder songs acoustically.

3 stars

Too short to give it a 5, but I think it's silly and fun. 4 stars from me.

I love this song. 60 seconds of punkiness that serve as the perfect intro to other songs live (such as Not For You). 4 Stars.

Great song, even better going into Not For You or Grievance. For what it is, four stars.

I don't listen to it anymore, but back in 95, just before no code came, there was nothing I wanted to hear more. I saw them play it in Austin TX in 95, and was blown away. The first time I heard it was on a bootleg where it wasn't called Lukin. They called it 100 Pacer. That wasn't very long after Vitalogy was released. I'm thinking feb or march of 95.

4/5 stars

If Pearl Jam ever went completely punk, the album would sound like this. And this is a damn good thing.

5 stars.

I love Lukin. But even with the love for it I can admit it's not quite a five star song, so I give it four stars. True, it does serve best going into Not For You or Grievance

Take it for what it is.

I used to like it a lot, kind of not so much anymore

This song does nothing for me, although the Benaroya version was pretty good.

3 stars... Several people have mentioned that it kicks ass live, coming in front of Not for You or Grievance or Whipping.... I totally agree with that sentiment. Still, it's not one of my favorites.... It could suffer in the rankings because it's a weaker song lying in the middle of my favorite album, but maybe I'm just overanalyzing this :)

The simple fact that Ed can sing those lyrics that quickly and heavy is enough for a 5 star rating. I never tire of hearing it.
