I was thinking about this listening to the Benaroya show on the way to work this morning.
There are PJ songs I that probably weren't my favorites. I won't say I disliked them but they weren't at the top of my list. After hearing/seeing a live version I've grown new appreciation for these songs.
Two for sure were Present Tense and Sleight of Hand. Present Tense was a decent song but after seeing them play it live it quickly became a track I couldn't get enough of.
Anyone else experience this with other songs?

More recently though was WWS... I absolutely despised that song musically, untill I heard it on the AOL sessions... Now I find myself jamming that version alot.
I'm also looking foward to hearing Inside Job live. On the album, the intro got me up on this giant 90 foot wave of anticipation.... then the rest of the song just seemed like it was missing something.

Good question! Yeah I hadn't listened to Small Town in about 10 years, simply because it was my favourite song off Vs. when it came out and I overplayed it, so I never chose to listen to it, just figured I was still sick of it. Then the 2005 Vancouver show happened. Soooooo amazing, when the whole crowd shouted HELLO back to them, goosebumps for everyone. I also love the fact that they changed the tune a bit at the end when the crowd is singing "Hearts and thoughts..." when he takes over at "Fade away" he lifts his voice instead of lowering it and it sounds amazing. Love this song now!

I literally thought of Grievance as a throw away on Binaural, just heard the intro then pressed the forward button....I saw it live for the first time on the Touring Band DVD and then heard it personally in 03 and now consider it a highlight of a concert.

Help, Help from Det 1 in 03. Really strong listen
Rival from Det 1 in 03. To a much lesser extent than Help, Help. Think it would work well in a small club, and perhaps better with the new amps they appear to be using
Det 1 03--often overlooked, but carries some serious pop

Leash. I thought it was average until I heard an early recording the band did of it (before even Ten, I believe). More energy than I had ever heard in a song.

AOL sessions of Gone made me love it more on the album, but then hearing it live in Albany, it became my fav on the album.

Insignificance did nothing for me until I heard it live a couple times.
Whenever I want to showcase Pearl Jam for a friend I always play Present Tense for Katowice I and Yellow Ledbetter from Katowice II. Others I include are; Crazy Mary from Seattle 2000 or Ottawa 2005, All or None from Boston 3 2003, Immortality from Benaroya 2004. I liked all these songs already but these live versions just take them to a new level.

SoH and Parting Ways (the later I've never seen in person) both jump out at me.

I agree bigtime w/ SoH. An Italy boot I have (Milan?) from 2000 blew me away. Love it now.
I have never heard a live version of SoH which lived up to the studio version, it always sounds quieter to me in a performance setting. Save You, Thumbing My Way and 1/2 Full all have been much better live IMO

I don't have a great bootleg of it, but Immortality from 09/16/96 Key Arena in Seattle is an amazing version too. I remember the song echoing through the whole place. Gave me those goosebumps for months after that to listen to it.
