This has been discussed here and ive even seen it here, but have you ever noticed that some of the biggest pearl jam fans around, who get just as pumped as me about a new tour, have no interest whatsoever in the newer albums? This one guy who i always talk to about PJ hates riot act and says that "yeah, theres like 4 good songs on the new album and the rest is garbage", but he continues to be propelled by the music of 91-95 to attend the shows and buy the merchandise etc. I gotta say, i love binaural but if that had been their first album i doubt i would like it as much. Its much easier to appreciate with the history thats behind it, the music thats behind it. But i do really love these later albums, especially the brand spankin new one. With the exception of the members on this board, though, i find it rare to find an "all-around" fan. But the strength of that earlier stuff is all a lot of people need. I guess its not too odd. I can't be bothered with 80s and 90s rolling stones.

I'm more of a mid-albums fan, my favorites are vitalogy -> binaural.

i think in order to be a true fan you need to atleast appreciate all of the albums. just like in sports you're not going to like every player on the team, and well for some they are not going to like every PJ song. (not for me i love every PJ song). yeah it's about a taste in music, but if you say "yeah i love pearl jam, but i hate Riot Act and Ten and VS." it's difficult for me to see you as a true fan.

maybe we should draw a distinction between a complete fan and a true fan.

maybe, just maybe, a true fan needs to be able to assess each album honestly and without blinding loyalty? Just a suggestion, but what would i know, i've only been a fan since Ten  :)

*that's what the arrow is for right?

I've been a fan since Ten and my favorite albums is yield. Not to thrilled with Riot Act or Binaural but there are a hand full of songs off each of those albums that I really enjoy. The new album is growing on me as the days go by. Besides Big Wave I think the rest of the tracks are really damn good.
