I just downloaded this song after not having heard in years and just thought I should remind everyone as I'm reminded of how amazing Ed sounds on this live track. Though it's a Dylan cover, it makes me wonder if there's a style of music here that PJ should've explored into, as great as they sound on this song.

What version are you listening to? The original Eddie and Mike version from the Dylan concert is the definitive performance. That was like 14 years ago and I agree that it is amazing.
However, the 2004 versions do nothing for me. The take they did on Letterman was awful and actually cut out an entire verse of the song.
Even the most recent versions leave me unimpressed because they just can't compare to the big one from 1992

I haven't heard this version - what concert was it in (according to pearljam.com it was first played in 2003) and anyone have it for download (preferably the whole concert)
i think its a song that is soley made as good as it is live from PJ because of Ed...if there was a solo album done by EV he could pull anything off like this perfectly..

if you have limewire just type in bob dylan masters of war and pearl jam and the right one should come up somewhere. i had a little toruble finding it.

vocally 91 is superior but I do like the fullness and the sinister edge the full band version has.

It was played 10/16/92 at Madison Square Garden as part of a big tribute concert celebrating 30 years of Bob Dylan's music. Pearl Jam did not perform. Eddie and Mike played the song together, accompanyed by G.E. Smith (of the Saturday Night Live Band).
The show can be purchased on CD in stores (soundboard recordings of just this song are equally easy to find). It is not a PJ concert in any way and this is the only song with PJ members. Clapton, Petty, Neil Young, and a whole bunch of other famous musicians played songs.
PJ was an up and coming band at that point but nowhere near superstar status. In fact, it is somewhat surprising that Ed and Mike got the invite. I think Eddie really felt like he had something to prove that night and that is why the performance is so jaw-droppingly good. He was a relatively unknown or at least unaccomplished singer surrounded by rock legends and fucking up that song would have been beyond embarassing.
You can tell that it was rehearsed to perfection.

Had Ed remembered all the lyrics, the Boston 2006 version would have given the 92 version a run for its money. Phenomenal instrumentation on the 06 version.
