It's a neat article but the site is a pain in the ass

They rate the two bands in a number of categories

new Album

PJ: 90%
Tool: 78%

Image
Pearl JMa: 75%
Tool 88%

Relevance
PJ: 85%
Tool: 80%

nice line in the PJ section. In an age where small puppies like Live and Nickleback claim they play rock it is good to have a guard-dog you can trust.

Lead Singer:
Pearl Jam: 96%
Tool: 98%

Lyrics:
Pearl Jam: 93%
Tool 84%

Live
PJ: 91%
Tool: 94%

Worth quoting from the PJ live part. This is a fair citique.

Today they play shows worthy of the true-rock band they are, and they often play over 30 songs, including a couple of tracks from people who are thier heroes. For fans who know all thier songs by heart this is like Christmas Eve. For those of us who are not part of the following this might be a little too much of a good thing.

PJ wins 88 to 87

Everyone I take to a PJ show is so impressed with the length and say it's the best show they've ever seen even if they are kinda off on that night, TOOL is cool live too but I would never say they are better than PJ. You what sucks though is Live can't be called a real rock band anymore, their new cd is very generic and even though every song had some potential nothing on it is very memorable and too damn happy to be called rock music if you ask me.

I agree about Live, and it's too bad. They had so much potential. Throwing Copper is a classic album, every song is great. Even Mental Jewelry before it had some decent tunes (even if the production sucked). But, straight downhill after those two.

Actually Secret Samadhi and The Distance To Here are really good but after that it's like what the hell happened. The record company should forbid Ed. K. from using the word love on the next record and see what happens it could save their careers.

:D agree 100% I really dug the different direction of Secret Samadai... Its a shame the last 3 or 4 (i stopped listening after V) sound so... plain.

I loved Secret Samahdi (it's no throwing copper but few records are). Distance to here was hit or miss and the last 2 (now 3) are pretty unlistenable

I still thought the point about PJ live was a good one. If you're not a die hard their shows can be a bit intimidating/exhausting. They are still my favorite band to see live, and they are the best show i've ever been to, but I haven't had the chance to see tool yet so I can't compare them.

I would say TOOL live is similar to their records, you either love it or just don't get it really. I don't know anyone who has seen PJ live and isn't blown away some people will say they are tired as hell by the end but that isn't really that much of a complaint they just couldn't see them several nights in short period like most of us. I don't think the last few Live records are unlistenable exactly but they are like the music playin in the background of a family restaurant that you can just ignore which adds to the happy atmosphere or alot of it could be the theme song for the suicide hotline commercials.

both great bands. tool will play 10 minute songs live and it is more of an experimental journey than a pj show. both are great in concert but completely different and hard to compare. congrats to both bands for making it on their own terms and coming out with the 2 bests cds so far this year. i still like pj more on record and live, but tool is without a doubt my 2nd.

I agree with just about everything you've said but 10,000 days to me has been the biggest disappointment this year for me. I expected so much more. After a 5 year wait we deserved something more impressive than that. Not a horrible record but nowhere near up to their standards.

The Distance to Here and Secret Samadhi are hard for some to get into. Samadi is weird as hell and the The Distance has a real eastern vide to it. I wasn't into it that much at first but now I love pretty much every song on it and sometimes I may think it's better than Throwing Copper. Dance with You, Feel the Quiet River Rage, We Walk in the Dream, Where Fishes Go, and almost all the others have some phenomenal lyrics and are beautifully delivered especially on vocals. Plus I'm sure you're familiar with The Dolphin's Cry which is pretty damn good. V has some decent tracks but most would be good if they weren't so overproduced and overly laced with falsetto. The last two just seemed rushed and although they feature some decent tracks the choruses are extremely repetitive and they are just too happy and uplifting for my taste and probably everyone else's. He seriously uses the word love in abundance in probably every damn song and so would just wish you could edit that word out of his vocabulary so he could maybe right some of his great lyrics again which in reality he may have just run out of.

Mind you, those two are their best 2 albums. Havoing recently discovered Live I listen to those two more than any others. I think Mental Jewellery is an individual and unusual debut, but its ceratinly completely aside from the rest of their releases. Its a shame the past 3 albums haven't flowed as well as the older ones, especially V and Songs from Black Mountain

Still appreciate them as a band though.

I agree about Mental Jewelry, some great songs on their but not enough diversity on their. You do have to take into consideration though that they were still teenagers at the time and still aren't all that old which makes it even more sad to think that Ed's well may have run dry.

They are still my favorite band to see live, and they are the best show i've ever been to, but I haven't had the chance to see tool yet so I can't compare them.

thanx. I wrote the pearl jam part. I know is kinda dumb to set these two band up against each other, but the idea was to look at the bands and see how relevant they are in 2006..

and speaking of live, Im gonna see them this evening. Get back to u all with a live update tomorrow
