This is easy to miss because it's just a little blurb in the new Rolling Stone on page 18 - It's about how Pearl Jam is gonna open up for Tom Petty, & he says "Pearl Jam certainly don't need to be opening for us".. It's a cool compliment, but... Opening for Tom Petty in the first place? What the hell has he ever done that's so great? He has like 10 good songs.

- I know this is Petty's last tour, and Pearl Jam probably respects him a lot, but it doesn't make sense when an opening act is way more popular & important than the "main attraction"

Tom Petty hasn't been relevant since even before Pj formed.

If Tom Petty is a legend, so is Tom Cruise, if Tom Cruise is a legend, then so is Pennelope Cruise, if Pennelope Cruse is a legend, so are Pineapples, if Pineapples are legends, so are Apples, if Apples are legends, so is Johnny Appleseed, if Johnny Appleseed is a legend, then so is Johnny Reznick of the Goo Goo Dolls

And he is no legend.

All I'm saying is that I don't think the Goo Goo Dolls are legendary & Pearl Jam shouldn't be opening for them.

Mmm ok, maybe 10.

But even going by what you're saying.. 20 or so, in the amount of time he's been around that's still not very impressive, let's even analyze that

20 good songs? Ok so lets say he comes out with roughly 5 albums then within 10 years - That's an average of 4 good songs off each album? But he's been around way longer than 10 years & has way more than 5 albums... So 4 good songs off each album is still pretty bad under what I wrote... But under what you wrote that means he has about 2 good songs off each album - which anyone on earth could pull off.

I own a few of his albums too, Full Moon Fever is the best... But he's definitely a poor mans dylan; young; springsteen, etc..

my point in all this, is that he's right.. it's silly Pearl Jam is opening for him, PJ is more successful in every way.

Tom Petty is in the Rock n Roll Hall of fame and PJ isnt... you may not like him but he's been rocking for alot longer than Pearl Jam...

Um, that's because you *have* to of been around for 25 years or longer, that's why he's in the R&R hall of fame & PJ isn't.

And the Rock N Roll Hall of fame isnt that respected either really.. A bunch of people in suits drinking wine talking about rock n roll has never felt right

*shakes head*

That analogy is just so wrong. I doubt I'd convince you of this, so I'm not going to try. It's too bad you feel that way.

While it'd be nice if they flipped spots for each night per city they are in, I just don't see how it would make sense for Petty to open for PJ. I think they'll make the best of the situation regardless.

He's even a poor mans Beck.

I agree that Petty is a fairly mediocre songwriter, but I don't think opening for him is anything other than a statement of respect.

he's worse than beck, but not a poor man's beck. considering beck is a lot different than petty.

This might be the dumbest thread on RM yet. What a joke. I saw Petty at Summerfest in Milwaukee last year with about 40,000 people packed into the Marcus Amphitheatre and it rocked. Go look at his Greatest Hits album and you'll easily find 15 great songs. Grow up a little, learn about some music made earlier than the last ten years, and you'll gain an appreciation for a lot more artists like Petty.

yea I know, but that's what I mean.. Petty isn't similar to Dylan; Beck; Young; Springsteen; Elliot Smith; Lou Reed; Bob Marley; Johnny Cash; John Hiatt; Robert Smith; & countless others...

He's just the worst.

Tom Petty is awesome, and obviously PJ respects him a lot so shut the fuck up.

For the record, I think Petty should be opening for PJ, not the other way around, but I'm sure there are more people out there in the US that would rather see Petty than PJ, so go figure...

I'm sure there are plenty of people who say Pearl Jam really only has 6 or 7 songs too, but that doesn't mean they are correct.

so just because PJ likes them means we have to listen and like him-?

his music is not original and it yes it does suck. if you like it great. awesome . but don;t tell me or anybody else that they have bad taste in music when they like PJ
