Hey, first time poster here. Love Pearl Jam, they'll always be my favorite band due to their wide array of songs and the way they tour. However, I logged on to the site to see if anyone had any insight towards the third single and noticed that "Gone" would be the one.

Have I gone crazy? To me, this has to be not only the worst song on the album, but perhaps one of Pearl Jam's worst tracks from any of their studio albums. It sounds like something that could have been written in ten minutes. Maybe it's me, but it just doesn't sound like a single. Here's to Parachutes, most third singles are a slower track anyway right?

I agree it's a bad single choice. I do not agree that it's one of the worst PJ songs of all time. although I'd probably rank it in the 60s.

btw:

welcome to RM.

yeah sorry to be negative on my first post. it's hard ot be negative regarding pearl jam but gone is such shit. i can't even stand listening to it. to be honest, i don't necessarily like "come back" either but it's growing on me, and i respect the shit out of the song. at least it sounds like the band playing it and not eddie's solo work. and it's a departure from what they've done. but gone grows negatively on me each time i hear it...

since we all seem to hate it, it will probably do great on rock radio.

(*note: i actually like gone quite a bit).

its probably my fav song on the new album. i love the whole album, but the passion that ed puts into Gone live is amazing.

worst songs on album: comatose and big wave

it really shows.

its one thing to not like the new album, thats your opinion. but every post of yours regarding the new album goes something along the lines of "if you like the new album you are a sheep/idiot/have a terrible taste in music and if you disagree you are wrong". its getting old

i suppose this is the good thing about pearl jam, everyone loves/hates different songs. That says alot about an artist.

It would be great if ESPN put together a montage of the All-Star HR competition with Gone playing.

I think Comatose would of made a better single than any song on there other than WWS, imo. Gone isn't a bad choice though. Straightforward rock that might have some radio appeal. I just don't know if it's heavy enough for radio stations right now other than the classic rock stations that mix in some new stuff.

as far as radio goes...the chorus is great and perfect. But i dont tihnk the beginning will hold a the listeners attention.

its like if you sent that song as your demo, the A & R guy would throw it out before ite ven got to the chorus.

Yeah, as far as it being a good or bad song - that's up to the listener. I respect everyone's opinion and for those that really like the song, that's cool. I read about the concept behind the song and I think's it's a nice idea; as is the story behind the song. But for it to be a radio song these days you need something that's a little catchy the whole way through and I think the verse/bridge really falter in that area. For that matter, I thought Nothing as It Seems was a horrible selection for a single, but it's one of my favortie songs...

For the guy complaining about people "bitching about pearl jam", it's a discussion board. You discuss things.

Gone didn't really click until I was driving on the interstate the other day by myself. It was cranked up and I was lost in the song. I still don't think it will have much success as a single.

i think the baby boomers/adult contemporary stations are going to eat this one up like they did "last kiss".

gone is a catchy pop ditty with just enough edge, it is easy on the ears, it has a let's get the fuck outta here thing going on, and it will make them feel cool to like a song by a band their kids like.

ps  welcome to the RM experience.
