I don't think PJ's ever been the best at arranging the tracklisting of their albums (ie Binaural, ie Severed Hand should follow Parachutes)
I figure Ed's behind most of those decisions. I think Ten and Yield far outweight the other albums in that department.
Do the Evolution belongs near the end of a set, as does Rearviewmirror. I don't like it too much when either song gets played near the beginning.
Boston II '98 is a great example of how a good setlist is constructed, and conversation prefaces/is interjected when a transition in the pace/tempo of the setlist occurs
If this format/style would be followed in every concert, Thumbing My Way and other slower numbers would be much more tenable. You can always end the succession with Present Tense because it picks up at the end and you can segue back into faster paced stuff.
VFC was a good way to display slower songs, but a TOTALLY different concert going experience altogether than an arena rock concert
Ed's the fucking man. Someone please start the club for him so I can join--no more of these other jokers, I just want to be on his team.

i don't like the fact that its almost a given that if RVM doesn't close the first set than it won't be played.....its this way since 04. in 00 it was played all over the set, i loved it. it even opened at some point. Same with Alive (in europe) in 00 it was in the middle of the main set, closer, encore closer. you didn't know. Now their encores are quite predictable (slow song, medium song, 2 or 3 fast songs always ending on Alive or Porch.) its becoming too polished.

if they're gonna open with this though, i think they must start it with a tight groove (ala WWS) that escalates (ala Release) so that by the end of the song, its at the same intensity as if it were closing the set
THEN they rip into more rockin numbers
Hail Hail
Save You
Last Exist
actually, Whipping would be great, or any other song fast rockin song Ed gets to play guitar on
Whipping
Habit (that'd be SWEET)
Grievance
only three songs I can think of that would enable this
Tampa '94 starts RVM --> Whipping --> Go that kicked ass (the Jeff Ament Imposter show, the one in which he's stealing pot and strip clubbing it)

ps. im not bitching, just observing and sharing.
do you think Ed just gets in setlist mode and feels certain songs only belong in certain places given the new songs they want to fit in, but as he changes and new songs are written, tour to tour theres variation??
maybe its just too many songs and some inevitably get played less
what a hell of a job creating a setlist everynight
especially if he had any consciousness of what the rabid fans want. imagine him reading the post-show reviews and hearing this fan bitch because this song wasn't played and so they play it the next night much to the chagrin of some other fan

I agree. They shouldn't rip right into it. They should slowly make their way into it.
Wasn't that St. Pete '94? I can't remember off the top of my head, but I know exactly what show your talking about. One of my favorites. The Porch/Dirty Frank is insane!

IMHO
Yield is much better when you track it in the order it's presented in the album artwork.
