Two stars: studio version Three stars: live version
If they let Mike go absolutely crazy with solos on this, it's a much better song, but I have yet to hear a version that makes me go..oh, this song is a four or five. Mike needs a good four to five minutes worth of tearing it up and this song is much improved.
Mike's forte is not particularly the slow bluesy, atmospheric thing. He's no David Gilmour. It's a nice song, 3 stars for me, but hard for it to go higher as it doesn't play to anyone's strength in the band.
I kind of agree. I think that it's hard for this song to be raised higher in a live setting, but at the same time i think all 5 do a really good job at doing 'their bit'. Whilst Mike has the freedom to take it places, he's quite laid back, and it suits the fact it's a 'band' song, more than a solo song (such as NAIS).
Eddie's vocals always sound fantastic on this one live - really good.
The last time I was hiking I gave this song a real good listen to and came away wishing they had done justa strong, strong acoustic version. maybe take away Matt's drums as well and give him an assortement of bongos and invite Dave A in for for percussion work. I really think Stone was onto something but that it went in the wrong direction.

That would make for an interesting live spectacle..but if we're talking studio recordings, i love the percussion on the Binaural cut. There's that Binaural-jangle (that coin/keys sound evident in this, fatal and sleight of hand), and a nice rhythm going throughout (that can't really be replicated live) and then the snare in the chorus, and some appropriate cymball 'swooshes'.
In fact, listening again, it's one of the most interesting recordings the bands ever done. There's just so much depth. In terms of what they could have done with the material and bare bones of it, i'd definitely say it's worthy of 5 stars...but looking at it from an outsiders view of being just another PJ song, it's probably just 3 stars.
So, to sum up i think it's a 3 star song, but for effort, ideas, production and musical depth i'd probably say it's a 4 or 5.

I would not like to see Mike go off for 3 minutes on this song. I mean, just listen to a lot of his improvised 2005-2006 solo’s. He’s playing an average of 3 notes per minute holding each one of them for app. 20 seconds. He could totally ruin Of the girl. But on the other hand, if it would mean Of the girl is played more live, I’m all up for it…

While this is just kinda there on the record it is usually a really good opener. I love the version lowlight used on his comp

I just realize that in the live renditions of OTG, Mike doesn`t do that little riff that starts at 3:57 in the studio version, to me that gives the song some of it emotional climax.
