Just heard this song featuring Eddie for the first time in a while, anybody have any thoughts about the line, "And i know that i'll love you, here and now, NOT forever."

I've always taken that song being sung from the position of someone who has the ability to give love but is in fear of committing themselves to someone for whatever reason, perhaps self-doubt on their own part that they have what it takes to make a relationship work.
The full line is:
And I know that I love you
Here and now, not forever
I can give you the present
I don't know about the future
That's all stuff and nonsense...
So...I just think what the character in the song is saying is that they can promise they'll be here for them right now, but don't get your hopes up, I don't know if I've got what it takes to follow this through beyond the next five minutes.
Good song.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, it's actually Tim Finn singing this song with Eddie, not Neil, Tim wrote it. Saw Split Enz a few months ago, they were amazing, this song was a real highlight.

I think it's saying that the person can only promise loving you in the present because you don't know what tomorrow will bring. It's like I can give you all I have this moment but no future moments are guarenteed so I can't make a guarentee to you.

best lyric I've ever heard in this vein is from the dan bern song toledo
What if all the promises you thought were broken were never really made
