Wednesday, 20 September 2006 Severed Hands on the Brain Mood: accident prone Now Playing: Pearl Jam's (what else?) Severed Hand Topic: Emergency Medicine
Ok, call us sick, but this severed hand case got us Googling. Turns out that severed hand stories are pretty common, especially when they involve quick-thinking patients who live close to skilled microsurgeons:
"A medical team of 12 doctors and nurses worked for eight hours to reattach a man's hand after it was severed by a machete during a brawl involving up to 40 men in Fitzroy Gardens." -- The Age
"A farmer who accidentally sliced off his hand packed it in his lunchbox, climbed in his tractor and drove three miles home. His wife put the severed hand in the fridge and it was later successfully reattached by surgeons in hospital." -- Ananova
"On May 19, Dorman was working in his garage on a wood working project, while his daughter slept in. His wife and other child were out. Suddenly, Abbie was awakened by the screams of her father. 'I hear him,' said Abbie, 'and I run up the stairs, and see him standing there, holding, well, what was left of his arm. And I'm just like, "Oh my gosh!"'" (Yes, the hand was successfully reattached.) --Barnes Jewish Hospital
"A resident of the old city whose hand got severed while working on a grinder machine recently was operated upon and his hand rejoined by doctors at Owaisi Hospital and Research Centre, Kanchanbagh." --Hindu.com
All hail the microsurgeon. But here's my question to you Body Hackers--what is the recovery prognosis for this kind of thing?
P.S. We also found this rather unbelievable blog post, noteworthy despite the lack of a happy reattachment ending:
"A caretaker of a yacht docked at the Lawrence Village Marina ignored a thump he heard Sunday night and continued watching television. But when he went to the back of the boat, he found a hand lying on the deck, Nassau police said."

I won't demean the severed hand thread with a merge
it's okay conoalias. If I may quote Tom Waits, 'we all have those days where we can't hit for shit'
