I think it’s one of the lesser songs on Ten, but that still registers four stars with me.

It’s my favorite show opener.

I think it's my favorite opener too...I actually think I like release as an opener more but since Oceans its played rarely, I get more excited when they play it.

Doesn't do much for me. It, being the lyrics and the music, seem forced.

I usually skip right to porch. This song, along with Release are the only ones I don't listen to on a regular basis on Ten.

3 stars.

I actually quite like the bombast stip mentioned. the drums make the song for me in many ways. Deep, almost tribal drums with Eddie's rather high vocals. Unique for Pearl Jam. Love it.

5 stars.

Faithfull and Oceans back to back 5 star songs. Great picks.

I like oceans, I gave it a 5. It's a nice track that is relaxing and soothing, which is a nice changeup from the chaotic tracks on ten.

shouldn't five stars require something more than nice. I don't think I have more than 20 songs i'd give five stars too

I think that Oceans is a gorgeous song. It's beauty lies in it's simplicity. And yeah it' probably more than nice.

It's not that I don't like the rest of ten, but I really like Oceans and Release the most. I like the ballads as much as the next listener, but I like the soothing feeling that Oceans gives off. I just prefer Oceans to the more aggresive songs, that's just my preference.

I have to disagree with the production argument, this song would only be half a song without that bombastic pounding drumming. This is one of Eddie's most unabashed love songs, and while it's not as laid back or simple as something like Parachutes, I still think it's amazing. You could almost call it a power ballad, or as close to one as anything PJ has ever done.

The lyrics are simple and beautiful, and stay just shy of being pretentious or silly. I love the overwrought symbolism, it's something Ed's grown out of (thank God) but it works well here. The music is epic and gorgeous but really pretty simple, with Ed's amazing pipes being the centerpiece. I can't really understand any production disses here, because without that echoey sound all of Ten has, this song wouldn't really sound as good. Sure, it'd still be a great song, but I don't think Ed's falsetto or the lyrics would sound that good over anything less than what is here. It's hard to make lines like "Please stand by the shore, I will be there once more" work without that echoey, distant production. Sure it's a sweet lyric, but the production gives it that over-the-top quality that Ten was all about.

And as I tend to do, I'm going to fawn over Ed's voice some more here. Seriously, this is Ed at his most polished and beautiful. It's early Ed at his lightest, which is funny because even when he tries not to be so ... himself, he still has that deep baritone behind it all, but it works great. The falsettoes are beautiful and I miss him doing that in their songs (I know it doesn't sound as great anymore, a la Parachutes, but I thought it sounded great in stuff like You Are, sad times).

Either way, I know this song doesn't fit PJ's hardcore image that so many of you like to imagine they have (Face it people, over half of their stuff is either mid-tempo or soft, stop wishing they were pure hard-rock) but it's beautiful and poignant and they've never really done or tried to do anything like it since. Not that they really should, they're not really the same band they were back then, but it's amazing to think the same band that did a song like this could still pull off stuff like "Comatose" or "Last Exit."

I give it a 5.
