Oceans is a weird song for me. It’s a 3.5 song (closer to 3) and I can’t quite figure out why. Eddie sounds great and I love the lyrics. I think it is the music. There is a bit too much bombast in this song, more than is appropriate for the subject matter (DAMN YOU RICK PARASHER!). I bet Brendan O’Brien could remix the hell out of this one—get rid of the echo and the unnecessary watery vocal effects. There is a four or five star song floating around in here somewhere Oceans is certainly a historical song if for no other reason that it marks the first of what will become the MANY water images that dominate his writing. The sentiment is quite romantic, and with slightly more danceable music would make a wonderful wedding song (I kicked around using this one for my own for a while). The song is a promise and a commitment. It is not a declaration of love. It’s a declaration of fidelity and hope. Most love songs take place in the moment, or look back to something lost and forgotten. It is pretty uncommon for them to look to the future, to endure the loneliness of being apart knowing that it someday it will end. Such lovely, mature lyrics, sung with so much emotion, and yet it is only average for me. Weird… |

When I was a teenager I loved this song. As an adult, it seems too lyrically simple for me. And I agree that this is one of the few songs on Ten that could be really good with better production, because the music is gorgeous but way over-produced. Live, it works much better. 3 stars. |

Though oceans away I've always thought it was "The oceans". PJ.com gives "Two oceans", so I don't know who's right. Anyway, I love this song, it's calm and beautiful. I don't care about the production, lyrics and vocals get me on this one. |

I agree that this tune is over-produced on the album...but I never get as much out of it live. And it has to do with the percussion on the song. The album version uses very sparse percussion and I love the arrangement. There is a shaker or possibly cabasa...there is some use of sicks on what sounds like possibly a cymbal stand or possibly a strongly muted cymbal and then there is the just glorious monotone tympani. For some reason the live versions (and even the alternate studio version) insist on cramming this inane rock beat over this song which sounds so forced and awful that it destroys the passion and initimacy of this song for me. Rick Parashar was a bain on the sound of this band to be sure in my opinion but his while his decisions with the other instrumentation on this tune are questionable, this is the one version that stands out most to me. I would love to see them open with this tune more often as I have not heard Cameron play it in person yet and that would be interesting to see if he has changed his interp from previous tours. Last I saw this tune live was in 1995 in Milwaukee and Jack absolutely butchered it IMO...was surprising because I expected with his experimental percussive background that he would be a great fit for a tune like that... 3.5 stars for me as well...but the tympani puts it over the top. |

i think i'll start off every SOTM form on by quoting Mr. mike mccready. he said something along the lines of " what's great about music is that a song can have 100 different meanings to 100 different people" i think that there is more truth to that than just about anything. that being said. I love this song. 5 stars. and when i listen to it, i have these two pictures in my head, they are quite obvious, one is about surfing and being at the ocean, the other about a girl, the girl, that will alwyas know you love her, but for some reason you both know that it will never work. it's one of the more sad songs, for me anyways to listen to. |

I like this song, like the remixed version a little more, the electric feel to it makes for interesting listening. didnt kurt cobain slam this song, or maybe black, for being a 'cliche love song', whatever he was an efeite snob. 'hold onto the thread' little did eddie know message boards would be invented one day. har har...

i wish they play this one more often...I love it mainly because it gives a different vibe to TEN, I don't think you can't compare (musically) this song with any other in the catalogue. there are much better songs, but this one stands on its own. |
