Though I like Breath, I'm not totally crazy about it like some people are. And Even if Leash is not one of my favorites songs either, I like its anger and energy, so I'll go with Leash. Maybe because I could feel this song's power live, unlike Breath.
I've always been disappointed in Breath live, and I don't understand why they can't nail it. Leash on the other hand was suprisingly awesome. I can't believe it aged as well as it did
I think breath suffers live for two reasons...that are actually pretty related to each other...First is because it is one of the VERY few songs that benefit from Rick Parashar's late 80s style of production that is rampant on ten. The production makes the song bigger than it is. The band today obviously has a TOTALLY different sound and style live than they used to. It is more subdued and natural than it ever was back then. Early live versions of breath are somewhat close to the album version, with Dave A. playing the kit and the persistant, flashing cymbal effects he used (some would say over-used) and the "ahead of the beat" 32nd note fills around the kit that were his signature...However the main difference between ALL live versions and the studio cut are the falsetto background vocals...in the studio they are tightly controlled, VERY effected, and blended somewhat nicely with the guitar riff just enough to give it the real depth that it lacks live. However these vocals are either omitted completely or they sound just this side of terrible when the band plays this tune live...and this is true in all iterations I have heard of this tune.
I enjoy both of these tunes...but to be honest, as excited as I was to hear both of them live in recent years, they both left me somewhat disappointed. I got less than I wanted out of the experience. I think I could have gotten more out of leash had I seen it at a TRUE PJ show...I caught it only in Milwaukee when they opened for Petty...but still it didn't feel the same as it used to. Of course this is probably as much due to my own growth and change as it is to the band's...
As far as which is the better seize the day tune...I like breath better. The same line gets me as everyone else...

It speaks not only of the hope and possibility of finding more out of life, but it speaks to the committment that is necessary to achieve it. You can't just sit back and have it come to you (or have someone take you there)...you have to reach out and grab it to find your own fulfillment.

Um, "Down".
Great call! Totally didn't think of it. And definitely my favourite over Breath & Leash.
I'm trying to keep these at two song--in most cases more could fit. At any rate, I have something else planned for down.

Musically, Breath takes the cake hands down. It's more varied and interesting. Lyrically it's a tough choice. Breath has some nice ideas and sentiments, but overall it's way too clumsy to accomplish anything. Leash has some great one-liners, and the ending chorus scream-out is pretty awesome, but overall it's just a bit adolescent and can be hard to digest when you're not 16 anymore.
Breath takes the cake hands-down because of the awesome music and Ed's delivery, but it's mostly incoherent lyrics hold it back a lot.

what's breathe?
a song by Faith Hill.
I think Pink Floyd, and you think Faith Hill...your musical priorities are all fucked up, pal. On the flipside, your sexual priorities seem to be in order.

I know it's also a song by Pink Floyd, but you beat me to it.

really tough choice between these two songs, but nothing makes me want to seize the day more than blasting Life Wasted.
