One of my early favorites off of Avocado, although it hasn't aged as well as some of the others. A wonderful soaring chorus (their best in years) that needs just a little more lyrical substance to really hold it in that upper tier, especially because the verses are a little dry.
I think the lyrics are good, if the delivery is a little dry. I think that Ed conveys a great deal of imagery and place with the song. The chorus is what keeps me from ranking this higher. It soars, yeah, but on wings of paper. At this point in their career, I don't think that Ed can rely on moaning a tune and calling it a "chorus".
If I were grading this I'd write "Good. Chorus needs work, please resubmit. 3 stars."
The more I listen to the album, I think Gone is my favorite song. Its so emotional, and doesn't drag on like Come Back (Which I do like, don't get me wrong. But it goes on too long)
Does PJ often perform Gone? What do you guys think of it?

i really think it's in the vein of betterman, the way the song is built - it's not a bad song as some posts on this board may lead to think - people are annoyed because it was the 3rd single while come back or marker in the sand could have been better propositions. idk - in 94, they were releasing STBC as a single, 96 - off he goes - you know - wtf and whatever... gone is a great song - i like the dark chords in the pre-chorus

Yeah it's my fave too- except for the line "gas in tank..money in bank" I hate that! It's like having to make a statement if the midst of this tale of longing- which I think is the appeal of the song-

I love the chorus and outro of gone and even the prechorus is pretty good, but it's too slow, and the payoff doesn't quite make up for the verses
But I LOVED it the first time i heard it.
