I've put some thought into this. Black, overall, I think is a better song. Mike's guitar on Black cured me of cancer. But there's something about the I Got Shit lyrics, "So I'll just lie alone..." Ed wasn't the kind of guy in high school who should know how that stuff feels. It's like Sleight of Hand, I mean, how do you even write it? I can't diss Black, but I have to give my vote to I Got Shit. I think the lyrics are so much better.

Again I Got Shit is my fav song of the 2 but I think Black is more appropriate to the poll. I Got Shit means other things to me aswell but it likely is about love.

I would vote but .......unrequited????????.
Is that near Kansas?

Most commonly used when referring to a strong romantic feeling for someone that is not returned. This is often due to a one sided platonic relationship. A relationship is often built up in ones head, only to find out that the other person does not feel the same way, therefore it is unrequited.

a few thoughts:
-i took the easy way out and voted for "can't decide", because they're both beautiful in their own way and hard to compare musically;
-i always thought the line should have been "walked the lie" instead of "walked the line";
-i think i got shit has some of the best lyrics out of any pj song, specifically:
on empty shelves, seems so easy to crack
got all these questions don't know who i could even ask
so i'll just lie alone and wait for the dream
where i'm not ugly when you're looking at me
-i got shit is simply one of my favorite pj songs of all-time for a variety of different reasons, none more so than mr. neil young's guitar on the studio version.

Walked the lie works well too. I wonder what the actual lyric is. I've never been happy with the accepted translation of a few moments in this song (the blue eyes line especially)

Isn't it "an empty shell seems so easy to crack"?

Black, for all its melodrama, is one of the greatest songs of love and loss ever written. I Got Shit is a great Pearl Jam mid-tempo track with a quirky melody.
Black takes the trophy on all counts. Music, lyrics, vocals, everything.
Oh, and I know this would have been obvious, but I think Black v. Come Back would have been a stronger, more fun match-up (as songs about loss) but I'm assuming you have something else in store for Come Back, so I'll leave my trust in the Stip.

Q: If love is lost, as in Black, it is not simply unrequitted, right?
except the person singing the song is still very much in love with the person. Unrecipiocated is probably more accurate than unrequited, but I liked the sound of unrequited better

But there is a difference between lost & unrequitted love- latter never existed- but I agree is more melodious
that is true, but I got shit is the only unrequited song in their catalogue (and really one of the only ones I can think of by any artist), so this was the best I could come up with for a comparison
welcome to the board, by the way
