Porchball--I don't know if it would have been possible for you to have picked a more obscure cover, but they played it once, so it counts. :) I don't kow what the original sounds like but I enjoyed your version of it. You shine in simple acoustic numbers and this was a good one.

Leknuk58: Not as big a fan of this one as some of your best work. Unlike Porchball, I like your more complicated songs when you break out the accordian and your other tricks. It creates a really lush, beautiful sound that I thought was missing here. Some of that might be that I don't think SOLAT works that well as a song when it is slowed down.

both solid entries, but unfortunately (for me as a fan) neither of your best. Bookshelf gets the nod.

Wow...Such a mellow set of entries...

Listened to Leknuk's first...I really enjoyed the Gone-style riff for SOLAT...And I wish the transitions were more solid...Seemed like there was a pretty serious vocal struggle to find the right key once the chord progression shifted after the first verse. And it never really recovered unfortunately. It felt like a somewhat uncomfortable performance. Stylistically I liked the take, although I have to admit it's not as ballsy as I would like to see in the quarterfinals, but at the same time it is an interesting departure from the norm for Leknuk to go with a pretty straight-up entry and really expose the performance to scrutiny as opposed to the arrangement...so maybe this was more ballsy than I initially thought...I liked the production of it. I am a big fan of listening to music with eyes closed, and this took me to a coffee shop and an open mike almost instantly. Nice work on the sound relative to last round.

Porchball...I liked this...certainly it is obscure as a cover, and it comes from a pretty interesting show...One thing I have anjoyed hearing from porch is the growth I have heard in the recording quality of his guitar tone. Early stuff was pretty rough in this department, but each successive entry has gotten better and better and this is really pretty good there. Great clarity and range. I would still love to hear your vox without the reverb...but that is personal preference. I can't really say there is anything wrong with this performance. Production is good, vox are there...but again, I feel like this level warrants a little more on the line. And this style isn't really the departure for you that it was for Leknuk...

That said, the performance issues with Leknuk I think were a bit too present to overlook at this level...I really enjoy your stuff Leknuk and the concept here is good, but as I have typed before, execution is king now...

 I can't seem to get away from the reverb. I almost didn't do it this time, but at the last second I added it. Kinda wish I hadn't now...oh well.

Again..if anyone hasn't heard this cover before...PM me

Lekunk...I'm trying to download yours now...having a little trouble.

I dunno, stip...I'm not sure a vote for me would be fair in this round.

I can't get State of Love and Trust to work for me at all.

Porchball, I like your cover but the reverb doesn't work for this song IMO. The song is about misery, and the reverb just makes it too "polished." I'd like to hear your version without it. :D

Once I get the other track to open, I'll vote and let you bitches know what's up.

I've just listened to Porchball's cover of Naked Eye...

I've heard both of Eddie's versions of this, and they are both SUPERB. I'm also really familiar with The Who's original of it. So basically, you were competing with both of them...and i think you lost out a little. There's no doubting that you sang it well and played it well, but you have the disadvantage of living up to your reputation, and this song probably wasn't right for you. Some of the bits sounded uncomfortable for your register...Also, this is probably my fault for knowing the song too well, but you accented different bits and didn't accent the bits that needed it in the verses - your placement was a little off throughout. Sorry if it sounds like i'm knocking you and being unnecessarily picky...i'm just trying to say why it sounded a little uncomfortable to me.

It was however, a good strong cover...but unlike some of your previous entries, i'd much rather hear Eddie singing and playing it...i'm sure you'll deliver should you proceed though, and you're worthy of a place in the final, too.

And Leknuk...

I've always found your covers really interesting...they're not just simple replicas, they're interesting takes on songs...This one is a little less different to the original than some of your previous, but i think it's great. You haven't got a voice as good as Porchball, but i thought you did good on this one...There's no times where your voice goes out of control and becomes uncomfortable, which is very easy to happen on this song.
Overall i really like the tone of this cover, too, it fits the lyrics more so than the original, and i think it's very listenable. My only little gripe is the "aaay ohh! ay oh!" bit at the end before the "state of love and trust.." ha...but that's not distracting at all form the overall cover :) Good work.

I think Porchball has a better track record of covers throughout this whole thing, and there's no doubt he's worthy of being in the final, but i'm going for Leknuk...mostly for the reason that i always look forward to hearing what he'll do next...there's an element of surprise to the approach of songs - and that excites me a bit :)

I think SOLAT is a bit too "empty", I don't know. It's good and very well done, but well yeah, not as good as Naked Eye imo. But still, nice work both.

(Why did I skip this entire competition, there's some fantastic stuff being done here! )

Alright, though there are only a few rounds left (though we could use this in the future as well for any other "battles"), stip and I have been working something out for you guys putting up the songs. i have reserved a (free) webpage being:

http://home.deds.nl/~redmosquito/.

This way no one has to go through the annoyance of rapidshare or any "free but limited" host. And also it's an advantage to get your song(s) heard asap, since no one has to wait minutes or hours to download your song because RM'ers downloaded your opponents song first.

As you can see the site is just plain HTML, if anyone cares to fix a nice indexfile or whatever just PM me and i'll put it up. Nothing elaborate please.

Also if anyone has ideas on how to set it up in folders and subfolders and think would contribute to the site, just PM me and i'll get back to you.

If you have any questions or feedback about this idea just PM me, I don't think it would be a good idea to clog up this thread with issues about the site.

I have my own website with as well with this host, and so far (the last 3 years) i haven't had any issues with bandwith, though i can't be sure about this. For all i know this could fail miserably, but i'm optimistic.

thanks for reading.

i gotta tell you, porchball is a good singer. really good. yes, a little less reverb but good. and you did a great of a song i've never heard before! so you've got that going for you...which is nice.

leknuk, i actually really liked this take SOLAT, it was very interesting probably really close to how i would have done it if i were to slow it down acoustically. unfortunately your vocal patterns everywhere outside of the verses was all over the place. i was singing along and when you didn't stick to the vocal line i was thinking of/singing with, it just didn't seem right. the vocal line i was singing was most likely a very slight variation of the original.

i liked the idea behind leknuk's but porchball pretty much nailed his. although i'm not sure that a song being covered just once by PJ should count, but that's not my business now is it! ;)

when we do the general covers battle in a month or so (we need time for this to finish, get the torrents in order and then a break) I would really like to look into getting Conoalias' site involved. It would be much easier than rapidshare

porchball - awesome song choice. i love naked eye - i saw eddie cover it with sonic youth at my very first pj concert (pitt 2000) and i've loved it ever since. wasn't a big fan of how you rephrased some of the vocals, but i know it's a really tough song to sing and you handled it quite well.

leknuk - like the acoustic solat. i actually thought of doing this myself, though slightly different. so i enjoyed hearing your version. very nice.

i think i have to give the nudge to porchball here. but both were a pleasure to hear (and a nice break from my own work...)

i sturggled quite a bit trying to get a song ready for tomorrow but i don't think it's going to happen. i need some sleep - plus last round i stayed up all night finishing yellow led the night before i thought it was due and something else went up instead - so i'll send it to stip tomorrow. i'm actually working on a song mikey covered earlier in the contest....

this is when you all say "nothing is better than the original (cover)!" and vote for me....psst, i'll buy you all a car if you vote for me.

Okay, I finally got State of Love and Trust to open.

This song just doesn't work when it's slowed-down. There's supposed to be a frantic energy to the music to match the lyrics. Normally I love when fast numbers are played acoustically and slower, but not this time. A solid effort, but it lacks a little.

My vote goes to Porchball.
