The line no matter how cold the winter there's a spring time ahead to me implies hope no matter what else is going on in the song- Nothingman has none of that - Nothingman- "I feel nothing, I feel nothing at all" James.

Agreed. TMW is what happens to the Nothingman when he decides to get on with his life, in my opinion. There's something so incredible about the sadness in Nothingman, I can't imagine voting for another song. TMW has better lyrics, but the vocal delivery on it is weak. In Nothingman, I really like the line that starts "She once believed...". It just indicates a shift in two peoples' perceptions of each other. It's like waking up with a total stranger in your bed, except without the intrigue and mystery that comes with it.

I'm always excited to find another James fan around here, and lullaby is one of my favorites.

Isn't TMW about a gay guy who has AIDS and is dying? I believe it's a true story about Ed's barber. It's about his broken relationship with his family due to his sexuality. So I've read on the boards.
Anyways, both great songs, Nothingman has an edge for me. It just pulls certain strings for me. But I think this competition is a little flawed for me due to the song meanings.

I've heard that this what inspired the song for him, although I think it's moved beyond that in the writing. Some of the lines (I let go of a rope...) dont' really work if it is exculsivley about this.
he's also said come back was written about johnny ramone, and I'm sure that is where his head was when he was writing it, but the final product is a bit more universal than the inspiration.
