Excellent analysis, Peter. However, I hate this song. Even when I was a teenager and adored Ten, this song never did anything for me. 1 star.

I couldnt say it better.

still, it's a waste to compare those. You might as well start listening to Kane (really bad Dutch band trying to imitate not only Eddie but also Bono and lots more).

I'm not saying I want to compare them, or that Creed is on the same planet as Pearl Jam in terms of talent, but it's obvious that Ten (especially epic, pretentious songs like Garden) is the style Creed ripped off (and turned into multi-platinum success, fuckers). This song represents all that and in-so-being it's hard for me to appreciate it objectively.

Regardless of that, it's a half-way decent song that symbolizes everything about early Pearl Jam that I'm glad they changed. I still listen to it sometimes, but mostly out of nostalgia, and even then it's hard to get through the whole thing.

Oh, and despite the fact that I just spent my 2 posts ripping your song sportsfreakpete6, your write-up was great, good job!

"face blood", "shadow flag", "garden of stone" and so on.

Never liked it til this year's reinvention, think it's a pretty awesome song now.

I'm not a fan of the newer version at all, it doesn't have that flow like others have mentioned.

How does that make it pretentious though?

a really great song, and tought i do not absolute love the re-arranged version, i guess i understand the need to sometimes do something different with some songs, i just think this was a magnificiant piece that didn´t needed the change, i must say betterman should take that spot.

I love the transition from the bombast in the begining to the smoothness of the melody in the new version.

the write up on this one captures the song perfectly
i've always liked this one a lot
and one of the few songs i haven't ever gotten the chance to see live yet
i should pull this one up, i haven't listened to it in a long time

Listening to all the 2000 versions of this right now to try and find the best one for a live compilation. Fucking love this song. 6-22-00 Milan is pretty great.

I've often wished they could have found this type of groove with that quality of a solo in some of their more recent albums.

I agree CHUD. 6-22-00 is a great version (and an AMAZING show).

I still love the intensity and energy in the 4/3/94 version. Dave and Mike get locked in so well. Eddie at the end... God I love it!
