What are some of the suprising reactions you have recieved about Backspacer from your Non-PJ fan friends?

a guitarist i have played with for the past few years that has basically never liked anything they have done from the moment they came out came up to me recently and said

"wow dude...the pearl jam single is f*cking fantastic. if they had been making stuff like this all along, i would have liked them ages ago"

with how much hit or miss reactions we all seem to have on the fixer on this board, was cool to see it win someone over that didnt like them at all all.

As usual, most of my friends had no idea a Pearl Jam record had come out at all...However, one guy that listens to the radio a lot in Philly said they play Just Breathe quite often and that he really really liked it.

My friends pretend to hate everything Pearl Jam just to bust my balls so I cant get an accurate read on what they think.

My teenage bro-in-law digs The Fixer and has him asking about Pearl Jam. Success!

My best friend loves Pearl Jam (came to Philly with my wife and I) but isn't a hardcore fan like most here.

He LOVES Got Some. He likes the rest of the album except for Amongst The Waves (but loves the bridge/breakdown), UK, and Speed of Sound.

I've played the album for a few others. All I get is: "sounds different, I would have loved it 10 years ago."

I get the sense that people do really like this album, but just don't care for Pearl Jam anymore.

Metallica fan friend said the Fixer really sucked, but after they played Got Some on the radio today, he told me it kicked ass.

My wife (not a PJ fan) commented that is wasn't aversive to her, so I take that as rather strong praise, all things considered.

My Dad is a casual fan however (sort of a ten, vs., vitalogy kinda guy) and he likes BS more than anything they've released in recent memory.

Been that way for me, too, for about 6 years. But one of my good friends is completely in love with 'the fixer' and he has semi-decent taste in music

Wow. Your friend must have horrid and absolutely appalling taste in music if he hates all Pearl Jam but loves The Fixer. He should probably be taken out back and shot in the back of the head.

Are Pearl Jam really that uncool? I remember some people giving me shit for liking PJ when I was in high school (about 10 years ago), but they were also wearing Limp Bizkit or Korn t-shirts and thought Nu Metal was the future of rock music.

More generally however, most people I know have some sense of respect for the band, but just don't care to buy new albums or check out their new stuff.

I dont think my friends really hate PJ, I just think it's more to bust my balls. One thing I will say though is that they dont seem to respect new PJ, but respect old PJ, it's weird. Like they all claimed to hate WWS and The Fixer when they came out, but if I've got a bootleg on and they hear a song they've never heard before like Footsteps or something old, and I tell them it's old, they like it. For example, I've tested them before, I told someone a while back that Comatose was a song from Ten, and they were like oh this song is awesome, then later I told them Last Exit was from Avocado, and they claimed that "it sucked." It's like those people that refuse to listen to any Metallica from the black album or beyond.

My 2 year old son yells "I want Pearl Jam" whenever I play music until I put 'The Fixer' on. He sings along to the "yeah yeah yeah" part pumping his fist in the air. If he wasn't so stinking cute it would really get on my nerves - the play count for that song has to be over 200 by now.
