The reason is that matt doesnt use the cymbal on the second part of the verses. So the verse doesnt really build. Thats what i noticed and i notice everytime i listen to the song and its annoying but i love matt just the same.

Is the problem here Matt or just the sheer speed that they play it at. It used to be a much slower song.
For what its worth I miss the cymbals too.

for me it's a speed issue. lots of songs are just way too fast.
also- re: "jack irons sucks". no jack, no band.
really.
that doesn't change his actual level of talent.

jack?
with jack it's not about being spashy with cymbals or serious techincal drumming. it's all about creating an atmosphere. his drumming has *depth*.
his drumming was always kinda boring to me. Other than In My Tree and long road there isn't a jack song I like the drumming on. And the harder songs on no code and yield are really done a disservice by him

I agree 100%. The video version itself of Even Flow is 10 times better than the album version. Dave A was the only PJ drummer who understood how to play this song.
I like Matt as a drummer for the most part, but he's never been the same drummer with PJ as he was with Soundgarden. I think he just found more freedom in Soundgarden's songs, whereas PJ's songs tend to be a little more straightforward. Every PJ drummer has filled a certain needed niche with the band, so I don't really like to play the "favorites" game, but I would argue that Dave A was the best PJ drummer from a purely technical standpoint. Not a popular opinion, I know, but it's my opinion.

Even Flow has been a disaster since it was sped up.
Most people have heard the song 1,000,000 times so maybe the band feels the need to "get through it" and on to the next song. I like the new drum solo, but I agree, it'd be more effective if they slowed it down.

I hate the drum solo

I prefered the song during the Jack irons era, especially in 98 before he left. I was never really keen on the song live during the Dave A days and prefer the current version (minus drum solo).
This is to do with the pace of the song rather the actual drumming.
