Satan's Bed vs. Red Mosquito

Satan's Bed
It's not all been said...been said and done...
I've never slept in Satan's bed
Although I must admit...still visits my place
Uninvited, as you know, he don't wait
Funny how he always seems to fit in
Funny how I always want to give in
Sundays, Fridays, Tuesdays, Thursday, the same
Sometimes the special guest, he don't like to leave

Already...in love...

Who made, who made up, made up the myth
That we were born to be covered in bliss?
Who set the standard, born to be rich?
Such fine examples, skinny little bitch
Model, role model, roll some models in blood
Get some flesh to stick, so they look like us
I shit and I stink, I'm real, join the club
I'd stop and talk, but I'm already in love

Already...in love...

Torture...follows reward...
Follows torture...follows reward...

Never shook Satan's hand, look see for yourself
You'd know it if I had, that shit don't come off
I'll rise and fall, let me take credit for both
Jump off a cliff, don't need your help so back off
I'll never suck Satan's dick...
Again, you'd see it, you know, right round the lips
I'll wait for an angel, but I won't hold my breath
'magine they're busy, think I'm doing okay...
Already...in love...
Already...in love...
Already...in love...
Already...

Red Mosquito

Watched from the window, with a red mosquito
I was not allowed to leave the room
I saw the sun go down, and now it's coming up
Somewhere in the time between

I was bitten, must have been the devil
He was just paying me...
A little visit, reminding me of his presence
Letting me know, he's a-waiting... oh

Red man's your neighbor, call it behavior
While you're climbing up slippery hills
Two steps ahead of him, punctures in your neck
Hovering just above your bed
Hovering just above your bed

I was bitten, must have been the devil
He was just paying me...
A little visit, reminding me of his presence
And letting me know, he's a'waiting, he's a'waiting...
Ooh....

If I had known then what I know now...
If I had known then what I know now...
If I had known then what I know now...
If I had known then what I know now...

Two great songs that are near the top of my favorites (although not quite there).

Satans’ Bed first.

I love the playful defiance in the song. It is weighty subject matter, but the song has such a great melody and bouncy feel to it that it almost makes it easier to resist temptation. The singer is in a comfortable place that he can draw on to derive strength and make his struggles easier. However, I do think that the music is a little too dirty. A little less fuzz would have made this even stronger. It makes the song a bit too muddy when it needs to be clearer (plus Mike is far too buried in the mix)

Lyrically this has always been one of my favorites. In particular the second verse is just a masterpiece—and is one of the most important verses on the entire record. There is a realization (from first hand experience) that the honors and rewards that the devil offers us are illusory, and that underneath the world remains the same dirty and difficult place. Once we’ve accepted that we can rise and fall on our own, find love on our own, and empower ourselves to do whatever it is we have to do.

I must confess I’ve never been a fan of the satan’s dick line. A bit too crass.

Red Mosquito is another powerhouse. My favorite song on No Code (probably because it sounds like it should have been on Vitalogy), and one of the few songs they’ve written post Vitalogy that really sound epic. And it is appropriate here, since there is a quite a bit at stake in this song. I love the contrast between the relativiely tame verses and the huge chorus, and that the transition between the two is so fluid. Plus the fuzzy, dirty qualityof the music works much better than it does on Satan’s Bed since the subject is so unsure of himself. The song is punctuated by this clean acoustic moments that just get buried underneath the wall of fuzz and leads during the choruses—moments of clarity trampled by how overwhelming the temptation is.

Lyrically this might be the strongest song on No Code, and there are some heavy hitters lyrically on that record. I love the metaphor of the red mosquito for the devil or for temptation, a small seemingly insignificant little insect, but once you are bitten the bite is all you can focus on. The lyrics do a great job of conveying a sense of feeling trapped, and of the inevitability of giving in. Although, because this is a pearl jam song, the singer hasn’t quite given up yet. He’s bitten, but not quite beaten.

I wish eddie was louder in the mix during the outro, as it is a wonderful way to close the song—a real ‘wisdom from the old’ moment. But of course he didn’t know then what he knows now, which is what makes the lyric so plaintive. He didn’t know, and now he has to deal with the consequences

Two great songs, but Red Mosquito takes it

If there's a future poll for "worst PJ song", red mosquito better be one of the choices.

Red Mosquito. The verses in Satan's Bed are great, but I never felt the "Already in love" line made sense around them.

I think his point is that he doesn't need what the devil (or fame, the music industry, etc) is offering because he already has love
