ok ok so i am bored at work, but on that haunting day in april 94, if that would have been eddie and not kurt, would pearl jam be nirvana, by that i mean all the attention that nirvana got and still gets to this day.... , or would eddie and pearl jam be even bigger and more on an icon level..... something to stew over, i personaly think it would have had a bigger or just as big of an impact

Kurt Cobain was always the bigger media icon and Nirvana always had more cred than PJ did back then, so I don't think Ed would have been bigger than Kurt.

But this topic is retarded. Ed's a fighter and not a coward....I don't see Ed copping out like Kurt did.

I agree. There's nothing like death to shoot you above and beyond being just a rock star.

Death makes the icon.

Hmm... I dunno. I wonder would Ten then have taken over Nevermind in many of the media darlings' top albums of all time?

nirvana's popularity was slipping a bit at the time of his death, although the unlugged was helping with that. A lot would also depend on what nirvana's output looked like after in utero. Even if it is debatable on the board, the general consensus of the listening public was that the quality of pearl jam's records really dropped of after vitalogy, which tarnishes the legacy a bit.

Even if the band had imploded I still think Nevermind would have held onto its spot since it was the record that broke grunge to the public. But Ten or Vitalogy might have been considered to be just as good.

I know for a fact that Ed hasn't died. 8)
But Pearl Jam was the more commercially popular band at the time while Nirvana was the critical darling. Cobain repeatedly said before his death that he was nearly tapped out musically and Nirvana had essentially broken up when he shot himself. His death was tragic but it did enhance Nirvana's legacy.

I always felt that Kurt talked the talk, but never really walked the walk. Sure he was good at acting pretentious and distraught in interviews, but I never felt he did anything to combat this fame he hated so much. They band still made videos, TV appearances, did interviews, toured, promoted etc… In the mean time, Ed was pulling back a band that was drastically more popular and it really showed.

Other than that, Kurt had drug problem which led to his suicide and Ed didn’t and now he’s happier than ever. It’s easier to fit Cobain into the rock god status because he looked like a dirty bum, he screamed a lot about drugs and suicide and put on a whole big show. I the “public” weren’t surprised by the suicide, almost expected it and were ready to enshrine Kurt as a rock God before he pulled the trigger.

well at least you have listened to all of the music and give it a fair shake. not alot of people who listen to the first couple records can say that.

I say fuck the public, all they do is suck the perverbial teet of Ten. which is a big reason im glad they dont play much material from that in general live.

I kinda see a paralel with kurt/eddie back in the punk movement in england. you had the self destructive nihilist like syd viscous or iggie pop vs. more strait headed people like joe strummer. everyone knows syds name, and he couldnt even play an insturment, and alot of people know joes name, but its not as much of a household thing.

the fact that kurt died dosent really make me have any sort of respect for his music, I dont even like most if it in the first place. it seems to me he always had to be pushed by prducers to make what people wanted to hear (and consiquently what everyone praised him for), and when he did what he wanted to do, it sounded like shit. it doesnt seem to me that ed had to have someone hold his hand.

beside kurt was an easily packagable icon, I would say eddie was untill they released No Code. imo.
