Why it might make the Hall: You can't talk about grunge without talking about Pearl Jam, and grunge is an easy genre for the stodgier voters to latch onto. Sure, it probably couldn't have happened without punk, but grunge definitely couldn't have happened without, say, The Allman Brothers. And guess who's already in the Hall?
Why it might not: Of course, you also can't talk about grunge without talking about Nirvana, a Hall sure-thing whose truncated career let it avoid Pearl Jam's slowly diminishing artistic and commercial returns.
Odds: 3-1. Pearl Jam never sold out. It sold a lot of records. It's out there rocking right now. It's in.

Why is Nirvana a "sure thing"? The live shows were chaotic and uneven, the records were good but feel really dated now, and the Foo's have pretty much eclipsed them commercially.

how does that make any sense? the guy says that pearl jam diminished or whatever and that they became a commercial band and then goes on to say that they haven't sold out? oh well i'm confused so whatever.

they were saying that the overall quality of the music and album sales went down, but that they are still a popular touring band and have survived all this. The point about sales is a fact, and the point about overall quality is conventional wisdom about the band outside of certain parts of its fan base.

I don't really have much doubt that Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Sonic Youth, Alice in Chains, and Mudhoney will all make it in when they're eligible. After all, as Mojo Nixon taught us, the Hall of Fame is all about the money, and all of those bands have made the money.
If you want to debate, let's talk groups like Tad, Fastbacks, Gas Huffer, and Supersuckers.
Or to keep it Pearl Jam themed Green River, Malfunkshun, and Mother Love Bone.

you're kidding, right?
No, but it's just personal opinion. I know lots of people who still like Nirvana, but I wince everytime I hear Teen Spirit on the radio. Sure songs like Heart Shaped Box, Dive, and most of In Utero are still listenable... but I think that if Cobain hadn't capped himself Nirvana wouldn't be half as revered as it is now.
Last post on this, I don't want to derail this thread.
OTOH, Pearl Jam has continued to crank out hits and quality music, as well as selling out arenas, for over a decade. And all that without the aid of MTV. What other band from the 90's (or 2000's) has accomplish what they have? DMB? RHCP? Radiohead? The abominable Nickelback is as close as anyone has come. Pearl Jam is not just a sure thing, it would be anti-rock-n-roll not to vote them in the hour they become elidgable.

I doubt mudhoney will make it, and I'd be suprised if AIC does. Even soundgarden is far from a lock
