I was thinking back today about the day that "No Code" came out and how (I'd say 75% of) people were so bummed out and disappointed. I will admit that it took me awhile, but I love No Code. It's is in my top 3 of favorite albums.
So, what do you all think? Which album do you like the least and why? Plus, name your favorites off that "worst" album. And if you still are up to it, bitch about the worst songs on that album. Gimme your "What were they thinking?!" rants.
My least favorite :
"Avacado"
Why?: Funny thing is, I can't point to that one lone reason. I guess that to me, it just doesn't have the songs to really make me wanna say "Woah that was a great fuckin' song and wait til this next one!" And it doesn't seem to flow together like all the others... TO ME. I'm sure some will question my lucidity.
My Favorites: Unemployable, Army Reserve. Life Wasted can wake me up sometimes.
What were they thinking songs: World Wide Suicide. I'd rather listen to Bugs than this song. Sounds commercial and utterly cheesy.

well, different strokes I Got Shit, in its studio incarnation, is a masterpiece though.

We have a great series of threads Buggy started archived at the top of PJ chat about what people like least about each record
For me it is No Code, for a few reasons
1--It was the only time I was ever really disappointed with the band. Each of the first 3 albums had been better than the one before it, and were probably my 3 favorite records of all time at that point (ten and vitalogy are still 3 and 1). So my expectations were phenomenally high for No Code
2--I think the fire goes out of Eddie's vocals here. He sounds good on the slower songs but here he starts shrieking instead of singing or even yelling. compare habit or lukin to go or blood. Not even close
3--No truly great ballads--I don't like off he goes so some of you might count that one. Present Tense is very good but even that is not up to the level of Release, Indifference, Small Town, Nothingman, Betterman, Immortality
4--No truly great rockers. I like hail hail, but habit (despite great music) and lukin are just missing something--and this record has no Last Exit, no Animal, etc
5--Even the midtempo songs, where no Code is strongest (in my tree, red mosquito, present tense, smile) are not truly 5 star songs for me.
But 3-5 are all fairly subjective. It's kind of tautological--the record I like the least will obviously not have as many great songs
so I'll leave you with 6
The pacing on No Code is terrible. Rather than take you on a journey it feels like a random collection of songs slapped together. It rarely sustains a mood and just bounces from fast to slow, meditiative to aggressive, without any real rhyme or reason. A sub par collection of songs can get by if they are arranged together in a way that plays to their strenghts, but that didn't happen here

Although I disagree, that's an awesome, strongly put together, point of view. I think some of your issues with the album are the reason I like it. Strange huh?

I still think the first run of 5 songs is amongst the strongest on any album--up there with ten and vitalogy
