Just another question for you all. PJ is a show in for the Hall of Fame. But if there career only started after Dave A's departure are they Hall of Fame worthy?
Highlights:
1. Yield being best selling album.
2. Bootleg series.
3. Best live act on the road today.
4. Fighting Ticketmaster.

What they could get away with in the 2nd part of their career could only happen because of their early success.

Excellent point that I hadn't thought of or factored in.

no, or at least not yet.

If the Dave A. period hadn't existed, and PJ's first album had been "No Code," this means they would've trumped the sophmore jinx with "Yield." That would've made Binaural a pretty great experimental third album as opposed to the so-so effort it seems to be from later in their career. "Riot Act" would remain the phone-in and the most recent record itself would be the hardest and best thing in the catalog. From "No Code" to "Pearl Jam," those 5 albums alone would constitute a career worthy of induction.

you need to have more than good music (I assume) to get into something like this. You also needed to have been iconic artists in some way, highly influential, etc. Post 94 pearl jam is a very good rock band, arguably (I'd certainly argue) a great rock band, but they aren't an important one--the importance that they have is left over from those first three records

Hardly anyone would of even bought or heard No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, etc. if not for the first three, I think that is obvious. You have to build a fan base and earn their respect before getting fans to appreciate an album like No Code. With that said, I am sure they would even have a small fanbase if they started with No Code, but they would never sell out a stadium. You appreciate the newer stuff because you appreciate the older stuff, ya know.
BUT, if Pearl Jam hypothetically happened to get together that late and were gonna debut an album in 96, I am sure it would of been a lot more accessible to the public and more of a radio friendly album with five hungry musicians trying to make it in the music business rather than five rich and disillusioned rock stars.

get over yourself, pearl jam would just be any other band without the first three albums. ten and vs are both in the top 100 highest selling albums ever, i think that's more hall of fame worthy than fucking yield...

No. Not even a chance.
Consider... they actually DID have the pre-No Code career that made them the biggest rock band in the post GNR world, and still, today very few people know anything about No Code through Self-Titled. If you remove that pre-No Code era, they are an essentially unknown band.

No Code isn't all that inaccessible. Say if this had been a debut, it wouldn't have been as big as Ten without a doubt because Ten is full of those epic radio friendly songs but considering No Code would have been a debut album they would have put out videos for songs and pushed things more with MTV like they did with the first album. If No Code was pushed more by the band and the record company to have huge sales it might have had big sales. They definitely belong in the HOF but saying whether it was post Dave A. is kinda pointless because No Code probably wouldn't have happened the way it did without the previous successes of the early releases which shaped the band into what they have become. I admire the band because they make great music, actually get involved in what they are passionate about instead of just talking about what needs to be done, they don't really cater to whatever bullshit the music industry is pushing and seem to make it a priority to not lose sight of what got them to where they are and they do things their way without much compromise and without failing. For me that's what makes them a great band that commands a lot of respect from the people they themselves believe are important. I didn't want to mention how they inspired a shitload of acts because I'm not all that into Creed, Staind or any others but many people were and are so for what that's worth it shouldn't totally be ignored. God that was long wasn't it.
I think they would have a chance, but wouldn't be a slam dunk. Album sales can't be that big of a factor in this thing, but it surely helps. Remember: Patti Smith is being inducted this year, and I would think Pearl Jam from No Code on have sold more albums than she did in her entire career.
