making fun of when JFK went to berlin and accidentally said he was a doughnut in german. He really wanted to say that he was from berlin, but he missed the proper pronunciation. When Eddie went to berlin in 2000, he said that he was a doughnut in english.

Correct.
JFK meant to say, "Ich bin Berliner."
But he got a good reaction anyway.

Berliner in german is actually a type of donut if i remember correctly. Like a fritter, boston cream. If your from Berlin, and speak german, you dont say Berliner unless you want a donut.

They've used the joke on the Simpsons lots of times.
I think the first time was the first episode with Mayor Quimby, and in a speech he just randomly says, "Ich bin ein Springfielder."
On the German, I'm not a German speaker, but I believe that saying, "Ich bin Berliner," means "I am a person from Berlin" like "I am a New Yorker." But "Ich bin ein Berliner" makes the word "Berliner" have its pastry meaning.
