3.

decent song. I'd hate it live if it weren't for the tags and I still wish it would become a bit more of a rarity. still, kinda pretty little song.

i always thought the "don't call me daughter, not fit to" suggested a girl who was close to her mom but struggling with mom's new boyfriend/husband.

3 stars from me. Years ago it would have been a four. A song that didn't quite have the substance to survive the amount of play it got.

Musically it's decent. The riff is catchy enough, and I like the quick uplifting little solo (reminds me a bit of the one in I am Mine, although not as good).

Lyrically it's two songs. The verse is actually quite good, with a number of striking, provocative lines that really convey the desire to please, the uncertainty of expectations, and the general confusion that is part of the songs dynamic. And the 'she holds the hand' line is powerful, as is th way ed's voice soars on the 'rise above' lyric.

The killer is the chorus, which is far too weak a line to endure the repetition it gets in this song.

Nice write up pete :)

If it were based on the album I would give it 3, Live 5, so I gave it four.

I really like this song in a live setting, its a good sing along, even if the lyrics are ambiguous, and the end of the song where it merges in to the tag is very atmospheric. I particularly like the version off LO2L, with WMA and RITFW.

On the album it feels a bit like filler.

I cant think of another song which I relly like in one situation and find mediocre in another.

Of their radio hits this one ranks low on my list; never liked it all that much. It was like they said "let's write a song similiar in tone to 'Jeremy' but with a girl and acoustic". But the crowds like it in person and Ed usually does some interesting vocalizations to at least make the ending interesting if there's not a tag.
Sometimes they will play it in the middle of some faster paced material and the song gets played somewhat sped up. I prefer it this way anyday over Bridge or encore performances. It gives it an edge that normally isn't there. Pitt '00 is a great example.

The specifics of the lyrics might be unclear, but I think the general spirit is pretty obvious. Especially with the "violins"/"violence" deal.

Plus I've always read the "shades go down" fadeout as an obvious precursor to the "finally the shades are raised" from the end of RVM, making the two songs a matched pair. Or myabe there's a third I've never thought of ("Elderly Woman," from the mother's point of view?) and it's mamasan pt 2.

Anyway I give it a four. And my favorite tag is "It's OK", and it isn't close.

Five stars. Classic PJ. Never gets old because of the potential of new tags. Album version kicks ass. Great change of tempo through out the song. The shades go down is a great line live (especially when Eddie used to cup his mouth while singing them).

8)

Usually skip it on the album. Live though, I think the music helps intensify the anticipation of the tag. I love the tags...

my friend is a great guitar player...a big fan of hendrix, stevie ray, van halen, prince etc.....and he really digs this song and is not a big pj fan at all. i guess part of that reflects my opinion.

three stars.

sometimes I will listen to it and think "yeah, this song's alright", but then other times it does nothing at all for me.

I would guess Why Go as being the middle part between Daughter and RVM.

I think it is tough to objective about a song we have all heard so much.
To me Daughter is one of the few Pearl Jam songs that hold their own against all the great rock bands in history. The perfect mix of music and vocals. It peaks and then has this great ending which live lends itself to amazing exploration. What other song by Pearl Jam could go all of these directions?

Check out 4/11/03 for an epic version.
