Angel
Like an angel, fly over your house Like an angel, pass out wishes Like an angel, I will move the arrow Like an angel, I live alone
I'm not living what was promised I am close but can't enjoy Oh I'm not dying Oh I'm so tortured cuz I see all Tortured, and all I cannot do Tortured, all I should have done Tortured, while I occupied a man
I'm not living what was promised I am far from glorified Oh I'm not dying Oh I'm not alone
Mine is not a celestial state with idle hymns of praise Time is short, I have an appointment at noon at noon in hell Across the waste of space and fields of air, I glide alone at night Oh please please think of me cuz I'm, I'm by your side
I'm by your side I'm right in front of you I’m by your side

Angel is my favorite song the band ever released on an x-mas single, and one of my favorite non-record tracks of all time. It is so stark, so simple, so lonely, and so beautiful. Eddie’s vocals are full of a glorious pain, and the melody carries the song along easily without detracting from the vocals, which are the heart of the song.
The premise behind the song is sad and brilliant. The concept of a guardian angel is someone who gives of themselves to protect others, to guarantee their wishes and ensure their happiness. But a life of that kind of service is bound to be one of loneliness and isolation, always on the outside looking in. Happiness is something you grant to others, but it is rarely something you can keep for yourself. You can pass out the wishes but in the end it is always for others, never for you. Beyond that, the sheer enormity of suffering, lack, and longing in the world guarantees that no matter how much you give of yourself it will never be enough. So the sacrifice is noble, but endlessly frustrating. But the best of us, or the best inside us, have the strength and will to carry on and do it anyway.
4 stars
I don’t know the painting this song is based on. If anyone has a link to a picture please post it (or even better, the picture)

4 stars, i really like the cadence of the last verse, and the soaring harmonies always gives me chills (and so did porchball's version!)
porchball's was really excellent. it's tied with bookshelf's WWS and Jblagg's bugs for my favorite covers of the tournament.

Stip, I believe the song was inspired by a poem called 'The Eloping Angels', not a painting. You can view it in the Listening Zone over on the Synergy Site.
Angel gets 5 from me.
I hadn't heard until 1999. I just started college and Napster was booming. I was a PJ downloading maniac and came across this absolute gem. I love how it's a showcase of Eddie's painful vocals and excellent lyrics too. This is one of the songs that makes me scream along and get chills all over. Ed's on point with this song and is probably my #1 chill PJ song. The live version is great too with just amazing passionate vocals from Ed.
This is clearly a 5/5 for me. It's always been a favorite of mine and always will be.

I got to see this live with just Ed and Dave A. It was amazing. I think the song is amazing. To me it's a song about the difference between ideal and reality. It's also about Ed and the fans. At least to me it is. I gave it 5 stars.

Beautiful song, heartfelt lyrics and an amazing vocal performance from Ed. Easily one of their best b-sides, one of their best acoustic performances and just an amazing song. I can't say it enough. Voted 5.

I've heard versions of this song that have skips on them.... never a clear top-quality version. But I think it's a beautiful song. I need to hear it more to give a "real" ranking, but I give it 3.5, closer to 4.

I voted 2, since there was no lower option. I don't like this one at all. Bland pretty much covers it.
whoops. sometimes I forget to click add after I make the fifth option.
