This occurred to me earlier today. There's something about his mumbly style that I find intriguing. He's one of the main reasons they are a good cover band. I love how he can pull some R&B stuff off too.

Exactly. It is probably one of the biggest reasons why I like about everything he's involved with.

I'd consider a comparison to Jim Morrison an insult.

Sober? He drinks a bottle of wine onstage every night. If that's sober, then well, I'm cancelling my vacation to the Betty Ford Clinic.

I think he has a great voice as well Mwobs, even if he can't hit the higher notes anymore. He just has this undefinable thing that all of his imitators (Stapp, Kroeger, etc.) don't. They may copy his baritone, but they can't copy his magic.

I think it's his aggresive attitude with his voice that makes him great .

I've been pretty vocal on my feelings regarding Jim Morrison in OB. I'll keep them there

Sober maybe isn't the right word to describe Vedder, but certainly coherent and NOT addicted to every mood and mind altering drug known to man is. (in comparison to Morrison, who, ummm....was)

the biggest beef a lot of my friends have when I try to introduce them to PJ is Ed's voice; they say that "it sucks" or "he mumbles too much and you can't understand a damn word he is saying." To me, Pearl Jam would not be nearly as great without Ed's distinct voice.

Same here, all my friends hate Pearl Jam and it's because of Ed's voice. It baffles me.

I agree with Yield05.

I have always thought of Ed as "the Jim Morrison of the 90's".

Everyone I know hates him too. Not only for his voice but his facial expressions too. I just watched Red Rocks and I cant remember what song but he is staring right at the camera and man it was intense! I was speaking with an opera singer also the other day about him, and she said from an educational standpoint he was something of a rarity and a special talent. So that seals it!

Ha, yeah my wife can't listen to Pearl Jam cuz of Ed's voice. She just DETESTS him. Pretty funny, really.

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but all my friends who dislike PJ are mostly put off by Eddie's voice, too. Because PJ aren't very big at the moment in England, most people hear it fresh and can't help but compare it to all those shit Creed/Seether type bands..and that's really irritating.

To me it's not so much Eddie's voice that defines Pj, but equally his presence and intensity. Not to mention the fact there's intelligence there, and he's writing and speaking out about issues - which is the important factor that all the imitators seem to forget.

And this is usually the reason people are put off by his voice, they fail to actually listen to what he's saying or understand what point he's trying to make - thus makling Eddie no different from all those other terrible bands. It's sad :(
